Centrifugal pump design and analysis
centrifugal pump and simulation
Aim: design and simulate the centrifugal pump and plot mass flow rate vs pressure ratio
introduction :
centrifugal pump is device converts mechanical (kinetic) energy into hydraulic (potential) energy by using centrifugal force. a centrifugal pump uses rotational motion to pressurize the fluid.
theory
in engineering, there are mainly two types of pumps used in daily operation in various applications.
types of pumps
centrifugal pump components
impellers
located in the center of the pump powered through shaft coupled to a motor.
it is a wheel/rotor which is provided with a series of backward curved blades.
casing
is the cover of an impeller act as the body of the pump to limit the flow of fluid. casing connects inlet and outlet.

goal setup
surface goal
surface goal maximum total pressure 1: inlet lid
surface goal maximum total pressure 2: outlet lid
surface goal mass flow rate 1: outlet lid
parametric study setup
input variable: outlet velocity
variation from: 10m/s to 100m/s
total no. of variation 10
outlet parameter
goal :
surface goal maximum total pressure 1
surface goal maximum total pressure 2
surface goal mass flow rate 1
Results of the parametric study
plot no.2 total pressure at outlet
plot no. 3 outlet velocity vs pressure ratio
plot no. 4 mass flow rate vs pressure ratio
conclusion
1) pressure ratio plot:
as the velocity rises the pressure ratio at every design point rises.
pressure ratio depends on the outlet velocity as the relation between velocity and pressure
2) ratio vs mass flow rate :
pressure ratio proportional to velocity and mass flow rate also proportional to the velocity.
so the pressure ratio is directly proportional to the outlet velocity.
the mass flow rate depends on the desired pressure, velocity outlet.
hence the plot 4 shows the direct relation between the pressure ration and the mass flow rate .
