Buckling Analysis on a cyclonic separator stand
Buckling Analysis on a cyclonic separator stand
Abstract
In this project Buckling Analysis on a cyclonic seperator is being performed using FEA tools and then the optimum position for the stiffner is being found using the Solidworks Design Study by considering the factor of safety greter than 25.00 as the constraint for the cyclonic seperator .
Introduction
- Stiffness
In physics stiffness means the extent to which the element is able to resist deformation or deflection under the action of an applied force.
- Stiffener
In order to increase the stiffness of a structure a stiffner is being used ,practicle examples includes the traingular shaped beams between the horizontal beams on a bridge.

- Buckling
Buckling happens when a force presses on a slender structure and makes it collapse. Too great a load on the columns can cause buckling. A slender strut under the action of an axial load will fail by buckling. Buckling happens when a force presses on a slender structure and makes it collapse.
Case 1
In case 1 we are not going to use any stiffner to increase the stifffness of the structure.
The cyclonic seperator is being modeled

In that, select buckling type for further analysis.
Select Alloy steel material for the stand.
Select fixed geometry in the fixtures option and fix the downside of the part

150000N or 150KN load is being applied on the top part of the stand

Create a Fine Mesh and then run the Study

The final result

For the above study the factor of safety was found close to 10 hence now we will be adding a stiffener to increase the factor of safety and further performing a design study to find the optimum position for the stiffner to increase the factor of safety.
Using the Top plane a stiffner is being drawn at a distance of 1000mm from the top face of the stand now when a load of 150KN is being applied and the simulation is meshed and made to run it was observed that the factor of safety comes in a range of 25 to 27.
Results showing the Buckling Factor of safety value when the stiffner is at a distance of 1000mm from the top face

Performing the design study for the optimum position of the stiffener

Conclusion
As considered in the previous study the position of the stiffener to be 1000mm was the most optimum assumption also the factor of safety rounds off to 28 .
1) Hence the buckling factor of safety for the cyclonic separator stand without stiffener is 14.041.
2) The buckling factor of safety for the cyclonic separator stand with stiffener is 28 and the Stiffner distance is 1000mm, after design study, the optimal result is 27.936 and the stiffener distance is the same as before
