Project

Bucking Analysis of Cyclone Separator Stand

OBJECTIVE :

  • To perform Buckling analysis on a cyclone separator stand.
  • To perform a design study to get the optimum location of the stiffner.
  • To Compare the factor of safety of cyclone separator stand with and without stiffner.

SOFTWARE USED : Solidworks FEA

INTRODUCTION :

Cyclone separators are separation devices that use the principle of inertia to remove particulate matter from flue gases. If the stand of a cyclone separator is verly long, it more likely to fails by buckling than compression.

Cyclone Separator Assembly :

Material Used : Alloy Steel with properties as given below :

Load Applied : 150 kN at the top face

Result Without Stiffner :

DESIGN STUDY :

A Stiffner is modelled and a design study is set up with following goal to determine the optimum location of stiffner.

After runnnig the design study, following results were obtained :

Conclusion Of Design Study:

From the design study, maximum factor of safety is obtained when the offset value is 1 m i.e. the most optimum location of the stiffner is exactly in midpoint of the legs.

BUCKLING ANALYSIS WITH STIFFNER :

Now buckling analysis is performed with the stiffner placed in the optimum location.

Results Obtained :

FINAL CONCLUSION :

Without Stiffner With Stiffner
Buckling Factor of Safety 9.39 27.10

Thus, it is observed that the buckling factor of safety with stiffner is almost three times of that without stiffner. And hence, we can say that the buckling strength increases considerably on providing stiffner at the mid point, which is the most optimum location.
