Boeing-747 _ Final_Project
Boeing-747 _ Final_Project
Aim : To model a Boeing-747 aircraft using Solid works.
Design Methodology :
Step 1: To model the aircraft we make use of the blueprints containing Front view, Side view and Top view. These are oritented in the 3 basic planes using the appropiate dimensions from the drawing. Finally we make the sketch picture transparent so that we can sketch upon the image. We should be sure that the 3 images are oriented and coincident to the origin.
Step 2: Once the blueprints are in position, we will be modelling for the Fuselage. We will be using a surface loft tool to create the body. To create this body we would require an upper outline sketch, Mid outline sketch, Lower outline sketch and Multiple section sketches to outline the desired shape for the fuselage. Once the sketch is completed it will be mirrored and thickened to form a solid body.
Step 3: When the Fuselage is completed we will be creating a Belly Fairing. It is also known as Ventral Fairing. It is located beneath the fuselage in between the main wings. It can hold the landing gear and additional cargo and fuel. We will start sketching the outline on the right plane and use split line tool to create the model. Once the model is created we will be applying various fillet and mirror the part. Finally we will combine the two solids Fuselage and belly fairing using combine tool to merge two solids.
Step 4: We will be adding some details to the Nose of the aircraft. We will draw some split lines to define the nose cone of the aircraft and also add the ribs to the nose cone. The Nose ribs are conductive strips that drains static electricity that affects the metal hull. The Nose is made of Quartz which is an insulating material. Nose cone also protects from the aerodynamic forces and the conductive strips protects the aircraft from lighting strikes.
Step 5: We will be adding Pitot Tubes to our fuselage body. Pitot Tube is also known as pitot probe is a flow measurement device used to measure the fluid flow velocity. For the aircraft application it is mainly used to determine the air speed of an aircraft.
Step 6: We will be projecting the sketches into the body to create Cockpit Windows and wind shield wipers. Once each of the part is created we will mirror and thicken some surfaces to give appropiate appearances.
Step 7: The next step will be creating the passenger windows. There are 250 passenger windows in the boeing which we will be modelling. We will be creating a sketch block and insert this sketch block into our model. Then we will be projecting this sketch on to the fuselage to create the window and use linear pattern to create all the windows. Finally we will be adding appearence to our windows.
Step 8: We will be creating doors and hatches, the modelling procedure is similar to the windows as we will be creating a sketch block. The hatches, escape hatch will be created using split Lines. In total there are 6 doors on each side of the aircraft. On the top above the cockpit window there is a cockpit escape hatch. On the right side of the fuselage at the bottom we can see 3 hatches one at front and two hatches near the tail of the fuselage. Finally we give appearances to the doors and hatches.
Step 9: We will be creating lights, wing shaped antennas and slot shaped antennas. Once the part is created we will be using Move-Copy feature to duplicate the parts and place it where it is required.
Step 10: We will create an Auxillary Power unit and tail Lights. Auxillary Power unit is a device located on back of the aircraft provides power for function other than propulsion of the aircraft.
Step 11: The next part would be design of the vertical staboilizer, Horizontal Stabilizer and the main wings. Before this we will converting our solid fuselage body into a shell of desired dimension. The sketches for these are drawn as per the dimensions and merged with the fuselage body. On the main wing we will also be sketching for the Flaps & ailerons, spoilers & wing lights and Flap track fairings. For the horizontal Stabilizer and the main wing we mirror the part and merge it on the other side. Finally we will be creating Axis reference geometry for positioning the landing gear.
Step 12: Next we will be sketching for the Landing gear axis hatches. We design for two different configurations, one is for the closed hatches and the other is for opening the hatches. We will be doing some extrude cuts through the wings, body and add different hatches as per the drawings.
Step 13: Next we will be designing for the wheels of the aircraft which will be assembled along with the Nose Gear assembly and main gear assembly. Finally we give the required appearences for the wheel.
Step 14: Here we will first be creating various parts such as Nose Gear Base, Nose Gear Suspension Arm. Also we give respective appearance for each of the parts. Then we assemble the above parts and the wheels using different mates command in the assembly environment.
Step 15: Similarly we design and assemble Main Gear Assembly.
Step 16: Next step is to design the engine. We do this by inserting the reference image of the engine and start constructing the required sketch to obtain the final product. Then we give the appearance accordingly.
Step 17: We add the Livery for the engine and the Aircraft by using sketch blocks and projecting onto the body of the aircraft and engine.
Step 18: Here we will do the final assembly of the aircraft. We assemble the Main gear assembly and Nose gear Assembly into the aircraft body.
Conclusion: Using the quick handy tools and smart techniques a Boeing 747 aircraft was modeled.
