Bird Strike - Project - 2
AIM:
- To create the model in LS-DYNA how a bird hits the aero engine and what its effect is on the aero engine.
- Based on the properties given for the blades, casing, bird and hub create the material models accordigly.
- A consistent numbering system should be used on the parts, nodes, elements, etc.,
- Initial velocity of the bird and angular velocity of the blades according to real-life scenarios.
- Create a new file which will include all the files like parts, material models, etc.,
- Mass scaling should be done on this model and show how time has been reduced.
PROCEDURE:
- Download the files from the challenge, Birdstrike file contains the parts, nodes and elements data in it, other file is the material model file of the blades.
- Create the new file so that using the INCLUDE_INCLUDE we can reference those two files into this new file. Save this new file with different name and reopen it once again and check whether all the files are included or not.
- After referencing those files, first thing need to be considered is that numbering system. For changing the numbering system we can use the renumber option and change it accordingly.

- For nodes it starts from 100001-114422, For elements 200001-230695, for parts 101-104.
- The material models are created for casing, bird and hub, the sections are also created based on the solid or shell we need to choose the ELFORM and assign it to the respective parts.
Material models of the respective parts:

Section cards for the respective cards:

Assigning the Material and Section to the parts.

- After assigning the material and section cards to the respective parts the contacts need to given.
- The CONTACT_TIED_SURFACE_TO_SURFACE is given to the hub and blades with hub as master and blades as slave.

- The CONTACT_AUTOMATIC _SINGLE_SURFACE is given to the blades because after the bird hits there might be a chance of blades hitting themselves. keep the slave as blades and leave the master surface.

- The CONTACT_AUTOMATIC _SURFACE _TO_SURFACE is given to the between the Blade and bird, blade as master and bird as slave.

- The CONTACT_AUTOMATIC _SURFACE _TO_SURFACE is given to the between the casing and Blade, casing as master and blade as slave.

- The CONTACT_AUTOMATIC _SURFACE _TO_SURFACE is given to the between the bird and casing, bird as master and casing as slave.

- The engine casing should be fixed in all directions by selecting the nodes as shown in the figure.

- The intial velocity of the bird hitting the engine is around 40mm/ms and the angular velocity of the hub is given as 0.25rad/ms in x direction

- The CONTROL_TERMINATION CARD is given with termination time as 10 seconds, CONTROL_TIMESTEP is also given to reduce the computational time of the model.

MASS SCALING:
- First with just using the DT2MS value as -9e-6, there is no additional mass has been added.

- Then the DT2MS value is changed to -2.5e-4 and it is observed that 1.36% of mass is added, and the dt value is also increased to 2.25e-4.

- The DT2MS value is changed to -3e-4 and it is observed that 4.25% of mass is added, and the dt value is also increased to 2.7e-4.

- The DT2MS value is changed to -3.4e-4 and it is observed that 8.36% of mass is added, and the dt value is also increased to 2.9e-4.

RESULTS:
- The vonmises stress variation for different elements for different elements when bird hits the engine.

- The energy plots that are plotted for when the bird hits the engine is shown in the following figure.

CONCLUSIONS:
- The model when the bird hits the aero engine is simulated and the results are plotted accordigly.
- The numbering system is also specified as the challenge is supposed to submit and the model is created by introducing the INCLUDE card into it.
- The simulation videos and the files of bird hitting the engine are uploaded.
