Benchmarking

Benchmarking:

Definition: According to Wikipedia, Benchmarking is the practice of comparing business processes and performance metrics to industry bests and best practices from other companies.

For product design and development, the OEMs have various stages of development of a new car:

  1. Pre-Design and development
  2. Design Engineering
  3. Development Engineering
  4. SOP and Vehicle Market

Benchmarking is a structured comparison between similar products/processes/services.

Benchmarking for car design and development is a process in which we analyze the various cars that are going to be the direct rivals of the car that we are looking to design. We look for the features that are provided in the competitors car and we also study previous versions of the car which we have designed.

Benchmarking is done in Pre-Design and Development stage in two stages.

Benchmarking-I: we define the competitor's price, specifications and features on the segment. This is a product level comparison.

Benchmarking-II: We do component wise comparison from competitors' vehicle. This is a part level comparison.

Star Rating was based on the following parameters

Mileage- greater the mileage, higher the star rating

BHP- greater the power, higher the star rating

Price- greater the price, lower the star rating

Boot Space- greater the boot space, higher the star rating

Brand- my own preference rating

Therefore, the car that I would suggest to Dr. Pughazhyendhii based on the star score is Tata Nexon XM.
