The perfect car for the consumer is the HYUNDAI VENUE. Below is the detailed solution.
Below is a table consisting of the information given and the analysis based on the requirments:

||
Office commute |
Parking space dimension |
compact car |
Compact SUV, |
Automatic car would be easier to drive |
Transmission |
Automatic |
|
The above requirements are placed in three categories based on their similarities.
MONEY:
Given the budget constraint which is more important than one might think in this situation. The consumer is married, has a child and his parents live with him. This concludes the fact that his expenses are a lot and with out a proper budget he may not be able to afford a vehicle. So, the car chose should be with in the budget.
Assuming that the driver is reliable and does not cause much damage to the car the average maintenance cost is a reliable source given his budget constraint. The lower the better.
His trip of 500km every month is a great indication on the importance of mileage as a lower mileage would mean a higher cost for fuel.
The fuel type also plays a major role in this situation. A common consumer may not travel an additional 500 km every month and given the fact that there is a 20-30 rupees of difference between price of petrol and diesel it is ideal to own a diesel car.
He lives in Bangalore and works in the city. We can deduce that there will be a lot of traffic so a lot more fuel consumption than usual. Which also tells us to opt for a higher mileage car.
SIZE:
The consumer has 5 members in his family so, all the cars are 5-seater as any less is not a practical option and any more is an additional expense that is not required.
Given he lives in Bangalore, during traffic in general in INDIA it is ideal to own a compact car for a greater movement.
The boot space is also important assuming they stay for few days in Madurai given the number of people in the family.
His commute to office allows us to assume that he was given a parking space. An office in the city means a lot of employees and not a great amount of space is given. It gives us a definitive answer that a sedan or an SUV is not a option. Ideal options would be compact SUV and hatchbacks.
The fuel tank capacity is also an important feature given his long trip every month. Does not dictate the solution by a lot given the lack of information on the number of gas stations during the travel.
ADDITIONAL FEATURES:
His trip of 500 km and daily commute to office says something about the time spent in the car. It is essential to have a good interior and amenities.
A long trip usually also brings safety in consideration and airbags are a must.
A cruise control would be a nice addition while driving for that long but would not not dictate the decision.
The transmission type also comes into place while driving for that long, but it is often a preference of the driver so wouldn’t not base my judgment solely on transmission type.
Child safety such as child seat anchor and child safety lock were not considered because it is an Indian family. Most of the Indian population let their child rest with their parent while traveling rather place them in a child seat.
Below is the table of comparision between 3 cars selected based on 2 controlled information. One being the budget and the other being a 5-seater car.
Vehicle Name | Type | Variant | Price (on road in laks) | Mileage (Km/l) | Fuel type | Interior rating (/5) | Maintenance cost in ruppess (Average for 5 years) | Transmission | Boot space (liters) | No. of air bags | Cruise control | Fuel tank (l) |
Maruti Suzuki swift | Hatchback | Zxi Plus AMT | 9.88 | 21.21 | Petrol | 4 | 20,000 | Automatic | 370 | 2 | No | 42 |
Hyundai venue | compact SUV | S 1.5 CRDI | 10.99 | 23.4 | Diesel | 4 | 18,431 | Manual | 350 | 2 | Yes | 45 |
Tata Nexon | compact SUV | XE Diesel | 10.37 | 22.4 | Diesel | 4.5 | 22,230 | Manual | 350 | 2 | No | 44 |
Pros and cons table:
Vehicle Name |
Pro |
Cons |
Maruti Suzuki swift |
lower in price |
Lower mileage |
Petrol engine |
||
Hyundai venue |
Higher in mileage |
Higher in price |
Diesel engine |
||
Tata Nexon |
Higher in mileage |
Higher in price |
Diesel engine |
We can rule out swift despite being the lowest of all in price given the fuel consumption by the consumer per month, the lower mileage and the petrol engine does not help him in long run. The Hyundai venue and Tata nexon are in neck and neck situation. Both are eerily similar in most of the requirements. It comes down to the additional features. The Hyundai venue is the right option for the consumer despite being 50k higher than the nexon its maintenance cost and the additional 1 km/l would make up for it. On top of that it has cruise control which is a great addition to his long trips.
If big cars are a reference to the visual look rather the number of seats, then Hyundai venue knocks out all the pins and a perfect car for all his needs.
