Benchmarking

Benchmarking in the automobile industry involves a structured comparison between similar products, services or processes on some dimensions of performance.

Benchmarking is the practice of comparing business process and performance metrices to industry bests and best practices from other companies. Dimensions typically measured are quality, time, cost.

Benchmarking is used to measure performance using a specific indicator (cost per unit of measure, productivity per unit of measure, cycle time of x per unit of measure or defects per unit of measure) resulting in a metric of performance that is then compared to others.

The 12 stage methodology :

  1. Select subject
  2. Define the process
  3. Identify potential partners
  4. Identify data sources
  5. Collect data and select all partners
  6. Determine the gap
  7. Establish process differences
  8. Target future performance
  9. Communicate
  10. Adjust goal
  11. Implement
  12. Review and recalibrate

For example:

It can be used to compare the availability and delivery of features in a product and in this form often provides the basis of consumer tests and reviews. These look at products and services and provide recommendations based on which is best or some form of ranking amongst competitors. is particularly useful when comparing not only performance but also practice in other words what do the different organizations do to enable that performance to be delivered? And applied in this way it is a powerful tool in process innovation on studying how the 'best' achieve their performance can provide powerful clues for changing the way processes operate. Process benchmarking of this kind can operate at several levels: Between similar processes in the same factory or service branch Between different factories or service branches Between different competing organizations Between different sectors using the same process.

Nissan Magnite

Nissan is entering the B-segment of the Indian car market with the production spec version of the car you see in the pictures- the Magnite. On the outside, the Magnite concept gets a large grille with a chrome surround and red highlight, LED headlamps and L-shaped LED DRLs, faux skid plates with silver inserts and chunky wheel arches. The alloy wheels are dual-tone while the tail lamps are full LED units. We expect much of this larger than life design to be carried over to the production model with biggest change expected to be smaller wheels and projector headlamps (on specific variants) in place of the LED units. Not much is known about the cabin but Nissan has revealed that it will get cruise control a touchscreen infotainment system with an 8.0-inch display. We also expect segment standard features like climate control, rear AC vents, drivers seat height adjustment and a rear arm rest.

Tata Nexon

Tata Nexon is a compact SUV from the Indian automaker. Launched, in 2017, it received a facelift in 2019 and is offered across eight trim levels with BS6 compliant powertrain and added equipment. On the inside, the Nexon continues to be spacious with its well laid out cabin. You've got a revised instrument cluster with an all-digital readout. The floating infotainment screen gets mobile connectivity features as well. Apart from the new upholstery, the Nexon's updated cabin also packs in new equipment to get it up to the mark with the competition. This includes a sunroof, fast mobile charger, rain-sensing wipers and cruise control to name a few. It also have five Star G-NCAP safety rating.

Hyundai Venue

Hyundai Venue the compact sub-4 metre SUV has arrived in India at a lucrative price tag. The vehicle is available in 13 variants across four trims, seven colours and with three engine options. The compact SUV competes against the likes of Ford EcoSport, Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and the Honda WR-V in the sub-4 SUV segment. Hyundai Venue price starts at t 6.87 Lakh and goes upto U11.67 Lakh.

Mahindra XUV 300

Mahindra XUV300 takes its cues from the bigger XUV500 in terms of headlamp design and the characteristic tear duct lines. The squared-off bonnet and shoulder line is complemented with Mahindra's chrome-finished grille and LED daytime running light. Similar to the Tivoli, the XUV300 gets a flared wheel arches design but at the rear, the tail lights are completely new. Compared to the wrap around design seen on the Tivoli, the XUV300 gets an LED tail lights which look modern and gets a very European design. The five-spoke 17-inch designer wheels gels well with the overall stance of the XUV300. Under the hood, the XUV300 will be offered with both petrol and diesel drivetrain options. We expect the same 1.5-litre turbodiesel engine from the Marazzo which produces 121bhp/300Nm to be joined by a 1.2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine.

Conclusion

From the data given above, we can shortlist both the Tata Nexon and Nissan Magnite. Tata Nexon is an India made car. There are more service centres available for Tata than Nissan. Also the price of the spare parts will be less compared to the Nissan cars. Tata Nexon has achieved a 5 star G-NACP safety rating.Nissan Magnite received a 4-star rating in the recently concluded ASEAN NCAP crash tests.Nexon provides the mileage of 17.4 kmpl and Magnite provides the mileage of 20 kmpl. The difference in mileage may be mainly due to higher engine capacity figure of the Tata Nexon (1199cc) compared to that of Magnite (999cc). Both are petrol versions. Nexon have a power figure of 118bhp where the Magnite have 99bhp. Both have very small difference in price.

My recommendation would be the Tata Nexon (XM(S)) mainly due to the safety and availability of service centres as well as the prices of spare parts are less compared to Nissan Magnite.
