Assignment 2

Assignment – 2.

Note: For questions 1to 6 please find the image of hand calculations attached.

3D Meshing: Arm

  1. The given component have four parts (base, arm, straight arm, boss), each of them are separately meshed.
  2. Intially for base we will creating a shell mesh on the upper face of the base. The base have two surfaces we will mesh them seperatly and we use only quads to mesh those surfaces.

3.A shell mesh is created with element size of 10mm and with quadrilaterals.

  1. An option element offset from 3D meshing option, the quad elements are offset along the two surfaces and the regular hexagonal meshing for the base is obtained.
  1. Once the base component is meshed we can go for the next component that is the arm. For the arm we will use elements on one face and spin them , We will create a circle center and using three nodes. Using the circle center and the proper axis we can revolve elements.
  2. Once the mesh is done we can create faces for all the components by using find faces in tool option. Once the faces are created we can use them for further meshing.
  1. After creating the mesh we can just associate the mesh to its respective component using organize command.
  2. Once the mesh is organized and associated to the respective component we can move for the other component i.e the tapered portion.
  3. To create a mesh for the tapered portion we can use linear solid option in the 3D mesh menu.
  4. We have to create the starting face and the ending face mesh, we have to make sure that the we have similar mesh for start as well as end face

11.We have to select corresponding nodes and the mesh can be generated which can be seen in the picture below.

  1. Once the mesh for the tapered portion is created , mesh for the boss is created using solid fill option. One side of the boss is meshed using shell meshing. Duplicate nodes by projecting the nodes from the arm on to the surface.
  1. Solid Fill option is used, In general option the intial elements and the destination surface, the nodepath and the line along the surface is selected and a 3D mesh is generated.

14.All the 2D shell elements are deleted.

3D Meshing: Housing

1.The housing has two parts bush and the housing. The two are meshed separately to complete the whole meshing.

  1. The mesh of the bush is done first , initially a 2D mesh is created on the surface later it is converted into 3D mesh.
  2. We use tetra elements for the meshing. An element size of 5 is given for the 2D mesh of the surface.

4.After creating the 2D mesh it can be converted to 3D mesh using tetra mesh option.

  1. The surface is selected and the tetra mesh is generated by meshing.
  2. Similarly the meshing for the housing is done but this time using volume tetra option.
  3. The size of the tetra element desired (5mm) is given and the surface of which the mesh needs to be generated is selected and the mesh is generated.

8. The quality of the meshing can be checked using the check elements option in the tool menu.

  1. Various parameters such as the aspect ratio, skew , the min and max length can be checked easily by this option. All the parameters are set to the given values and we can check whether all the elements are satisfying the criteria.
  2. Both the housing and the hub are satisfying all the parameters and the criterions. The final mesh assembly is shown in the picture below.
