Assignment 1-2D Meshing Challenge

AIM -

To take mid surface, geometry cleanup and mesh the 3 components with the given quality criteria.

OBJECTIVE -

Carry out the geometry cleanup operation on the given 3 files.

  • Practice
  • Clip Repair
  • Mounting Bracket

There should not be any free edges, convert all of them into refining geometry.

  • Clean the geometry.
  • Extract midsurface.
  • Clean midsurface geometry.
  • Ignore holes less than dia 5mm.
  • Create 2D mesh with target length 5mm, min 3.5mm max 7mm.
  • And assign proper thickness, by creating a generic property.

PROCEDURE -

Importing the geometry in hypermesh and checking for the solid part, if it exists, delete it but the part has the surface only, checking for the free edges and toggling all of them and deleting the improper surface and creating that surface with the spline or ruled option.

Fig. 1

Completing the geometry cleanup and extracting the mid surface from the parent geometry by selecting the mid surface option, selecting the geometry, and extracting the mid surface.

After extracting the mid surface, checking for geometrical error and cleanup with the edit panel tool and defeature the fillet that is failing for min. length, and then meshing the component with an element size of 5mm and giving the quality criteria in the criteria file preference with minimum size 3.5mm and maximum element size 7mm. Meshing the component with the given quality criteria. Meshing the component by small surfaces and with continuous mesh flow, checking for any free edge and unconnected mesh is connected with edges option, equivalence value of 1 and equivalence of all the unconnected mesh. Some failing elements are fixed by the remesh option or else with the cleanup tools that are used from the quality index, but still, there are some parts you can’t get rid of them because for that we have to defeature our model and it’s not a good idea so we can go with it. You can see that in fig.2

Fig.2

After that we have to assign the thickness to the component i.e 1.8, you can see it in fig.3

Fig. 3

Part 2: Mounting Bracket

This part is a mounting bracket importing the component in hypermesh and checking for the solid part, the geometry has surfaced so deleting the solid part is not required. Completing the geometry cleanup and extracting the mid surface from the parent geometry by selecting the mid surface option, selecting the geometry, and extracting the mid surface.

fig.4

After extracting the mid surface, checking for geometrical error and cleanup with the edit panel tool. This part looks identical if we divide it into 4 equal parts so we only have to work on 1 part and we can reflect the mesh to other parts. (fig.5)

fig.5

But here this method is not working properly so I have to go with our conventional method and mesh it with the given quality criteria. After fixing the failed elements, the component is assigned with the thickness value of 2mm to the property and then assigning this property to the mid surface of the component. (fig.6)

Fig.6

Part 3 Clip Repair

The clip repair part imports the component in hypermesh and checking for the solid part, the geometry has surfaced so deleting the solid part is not required.

Completing the geometry cleanup and extracting the mid surface from the parent geometry by selecting the mid surface option, selecting the geometry, and extracting the mid surface.(fig.7)

Fig.7

Meshing the component using the same quality criteria and element size as used above and clear the failed element with a quality index tool using the node placing the option, element optimizes option many of the elements are failing for minimum quality criteria and maximum quality criteria. But this part has a very small surface, so the failed element is obvious, but we can try our best and try to remove off element as much as possible.

So our model looks like this in fig.8

Fig.8

Then we have to assign the thickness of 1.8 in fig(9)

CONCLUSION:- The learning outcomes from this assignment is mentioned below:

1.To do geometry cleanup using the edit tool option and fixing surfaces.

2.Take the mid surface by using the auto mid surface option and the manual offset option. 3.Geometry cleanup on the mid surface and then mesh the component with the given target size element.

4.Fixing the failed elements using a quality index tool or remesh option.

5.Checking the edges except at the boundary of the component.

6.Assign the property with the parent component thickness.
