Challenge

Assignment 1-2D Meshing Challenge

Objective

To perform a 2d mesh on the given three models and to assign the thickness accordingly.

Procedure

The new HyperMesh file was opened and impoted the given model into the workpage. The model was checked for any discontinuity and an auto clean up can be given if needed.

The mid surfaces was extracted by using the automesh tool keeping the extraction option as skin off set. After generation of the mid surface, unwanted lines were toggelled from the quick edit panel in order to achieve a good mesh flow and to avoid element failure. The holes which falls under the diameter of 5mm were filled with surface.

The model was meshed using the auto mesh tool from 2d panel giving a target element lenght as 5mm. From the criteria file all the other parameters such as min, max and target lenght was also assigned.

After the meshing, the mesh was corrected by controlling the number of nodes, remeshing, using replace tool, quality index tool etc.

The elemets were checked for free edges using the edge tool and then its been sticked using the equivalence tool. If the tolrence is more replace tool can be use to correct it.

The tickness of the componet was measured and was the value was assigned to the new property card created and finally its been aasined to the mid surface component. The thickness can be viewed by turning the 2D representation on.

The similar procedure was followed to mesh the remaining component. Since the remaining part has symmetry the mesh is done to one surface and its been reflected to other side after wards.

Part 2

Part 3

Result and conclusion

The mid surface for the given three components are taken and meshed as per the quality criteria given and assigned thickness to each part.

The part 1 was meshed with out any element failure, but for part 2 and part 3 there are few elements failure happening. This is beacuse the min element lenget is too small to capture those areas. In that case i have compramised on element failure rather than avoiding the surface features.
