Sunseeker Predator Yatch

TITLE: Design, assembly and rendering of sunseeker predator 108 yacht.

OBJECTIVES:

  • To design, assemble and render the Sunseeker predator 108 yacht.
  • To learn the designing complex surfaces in solidworks.
  • To learn the solidworks software as a design tool in industrial manner.
  • To be industry ready for the role of Mechanical Design Engineer.

INTRODUCTION:

In this project I had built a sunseeker predator108 yacht. The designing started with creating blueprint setup by setting various views with proper daimonions and orientation. Then as per the blueprint setup all the parts are modelled one by one. After that all parts were assembled in assembly environment and then rendered using SOLIDWORKS visualize.

DESIGN METHODOLOGY:

A typical sunseeker predator yacht consists large no. of parts. But as I am designing a cosmetic model of sunseeker predator yacht so I focused mainly on prime parts and design them. Once all parts are modelled, they were assembled in assembly environment. Assembly for this yacht was quite easy because most of the all the parts were provided with references when they were in modelling stage. After assembly rendering is done with the help of render tools like photo view 360 and SOLIDWORKS visualize.

DESCRIPTION:

BLUEPRINT SETUP:

Blueprint setup is nothing but the bunch of different views placed with proper dimensions and orientation. Setup started with creating different necessary plane and then by using sketch mode on each plane, image with proper dimensions were added to each plane. Technically all the parts of the yacht were designed using the reference of blueprint setup. So, it is very important to set all the blueprint properly with dimensions. If there is any small error in this setup it will lead to big problem in successive designing.

DESIGN AND 3D MODELLING:

Some of the most important and frequently used feature in this project are described below.

  • Extruded surface: Extruded surface is used to extrude sketch contours in one or two direction to create a surface. In this feature material is added to the sketch and surface created.
  • Lofted surface: Lofted surface is used to create surface between two edges or sketches. We can also provide no. Of guide curves to control the path shape.
  • Fill surface: Fill surface is used fill the gap between edges. It is similar to lofted surface only difference is, it requires close area while lofted surface can be used with open area also.
  • Trim surface: Trim surface tool is used to remove Extra surface from the intersection between two surfaces or surface and plane or surface and sketch.
  • Extend surface: Extend surface tool can perform function like extending the one of the surfaces at intersection.
  • Knit surface: Knit surface is used to combine two or more surfaces together and make them single surface body.
  • Extrude: This is main feature for converting 2d sketch into 3d model. While extrusion material is added to sketch.
  • Extruded cut: Extruded cut is a similar feature to extrude but instead of adding material it removes material from body
  • Revolve: Revolve feather used for creating circular bodies about central axis
  • Project curve: Project curve feature convert two different Sketches from two different plane into single 3d curve. Project curve feature is very helpful for creating complex geometry.
  • Rollback: Rollback is a powerful feature which gave us access to edit parent feature without disturbing the child feature (most of the time). rollback is widely used to remove errors from parent feature or add sum more functions to parent feature.

PART DESIGN:

  • HULL:

While designing a yacht we can say hull was the most important part. Because it is the hull who bears all the load and create water lift to move the giant marine vehicle. For designing hull, I started with creating curves similar to blueprint. And then by using surface tools like loft, fill, trim, knit, etc I created closed surface body. I designed this yacht with an industrial approach so I first designed half hull by creating different surfaces as closed body and then converted the surface body into solid. After converting into solid body, I mirrored half hull body about the mid plane and created the full hull. For me the most difficult part while designing the hull was the railings, because while creating the railings I had to keep an eye on relation every moment. The major tools used while designing hull were surface loft, surface trim, surface knit, boss extrude and cut extrude. For appearance I applied decals to the deck, stairs, garage and lower surface which results in improving aesthetics of yacht.

  • SUPERSTRUCTURE:

Superstructure is an multi body part which consists of cockpit, table, viper, window. It was also designed halfly and then mirrored about mid plane which saved lots of time. The designing of superstructure was totally based on the 3d curves and 3d sketches. 3d curves were created by projecting two different sketches which were made with reference to blueprint. The most frequently used tools while designing superstructure were surface loft, surface trim, surface knit, surface fill and extended surface. Wind shield and other windows were provided with dark colour and other part of superstructure with white appearance.

  • FRONT SEAT:

Designing of front seat started with creating the curves with reference to blueprint. The major features used during designing of front seat were surface loft, surface trim, surface knit, cut extrude. A dome was also used to create mattress like appearance on the seat. The mattress was provided with light gray color whereas the other seat surface with white color.

MIDDLE SEAT:

Middle seat is located behind the superstructure. It was created with reference of blueprint on hull surface. One table was also created with the middle seat. The major feature used during designing the middle seat were boss extrude, chamfer, fillet.

REAR SEAT:

Rear seat was most complex among the three seats that’s why it was first crated as closed surface body and then converted into solid body. While designing rear seat I first create closed surface body of half seat by using surface tools like sweep, trim, knit and loft. Seat was first designed half and then it was mirrored to get the full seat. Major surface tool used for designing rear seat were sweep, loft, trim, knit, extend.

GARAGE DOOR:

As like the other parts of the yacht garage door is also designed half and then mirrored about mid plane. Garage door was created out of the splited block out of hull. Holes with the help of cut extrude were created at upper side for pins, through which garage door will connect to the hull and open and close. Blue color was given as appearance to it.

RADARMAST:

Radar mast is an multi body part consisting of antenna, navigation light, fog horn and radar scanner. Boss extrude, sweep, revolve, fillet and mirror were the main features while crating this part. White color is given as appearance to most of the parts.

RADAR:

In marine vehicle radar play a crucial role. Radar detect and scan the position of other thing with respect to itself. It created by using extrude and fillet feature. One hole is also provided there for rotation of it.

PROPELLER:

Propeller is responsible for the high speed of the yacht. Due to the pressure difference created by the blades it moves forward in water. Revolve, loft and fillet were the key feature used while creating the propeller.

Assembly:

For assembly of the 108m yacht i started with inserting hull first. It gets fixed. After that one by one I insert superstructure, radar mast and without placing them manually anywhere i just clicked enter and they get fixed on their location. The reason behind these was while creating the superstructure i take reference of hull surface and while creating radar mast I took reference of superstructure in similar manner I took references for front seat and middle seat while modelling them. Then I insert rear seat as like other seats it does not gets fixed while I fixed it with hull surface by using coincident mate. Radar and propeller fixed to the assembly by using collinear and coincident mate manually. 3 propellers inserted in the assembly at proper positions.

RENDERING:

For rendering of the yacht, I used photo view 360 and SOLIDWORKS visualize. I used photo view for adding decals and visualize for final rendering. In SOLIDWORKS visualize for environment I used image as backplate to match the environment with my yacht assembly. Then as per the observed environment I added some light for creating shadows. And finished rendering high quality images.

CONCLUSION:

Successfully designed, assembled and rendered the Sunseeker predator 108 yacht. Learned to design the complex surfaces in solidworks. Also learned SOLIDWORKS software as a design tool in industrial manner. This project really helps me to enhance my designing skill and help me to become industry ready for the role of Mechanical Design Engineer. Overall, the project was successful.
