Assembly of Yacht

PROJECT REPORT

TITLE: DESIGN OF SUNSEEKER PREDATOR YACHT

OBJECTIVE: To design and model the parts of the sunseeker predator yacht, assembling the parts to get the final product and finally rendering it to give it a nice finished look.

INTRODUCTION: The parts are designed, modelled and assembled in "SOLIDWORKS 2015". It is a 3D CAD and CAE Software built by Dassault Systémes . The rendering of the model is done in Photoview 360 or Solidworks visualise.

DESIGN METHODOLOGY:

DESCRIPTION:

After the reference sketch is created and idea of the model is generated the part modelling and designing is done in Solidworks . The Sunseeker Predator Yacht consists of 9 parts. These are as follows:

  1. Propeller
  2. Radar
  3. Hull
  4. Superstructure
  5. Radar Mast
  6. Front Seat
  7. Middle Seat
  8. Rear Seat
  9. Garage Door

These parts are created using different tools and features in solidworks and are given appropriate appearances. We will take a look at all these in details.

PROPELLER:

Propeller provides the thrust to the yacht for its movement. It is mainly fitted at the end of the yacht and is directly connected to the engine with the help of a shaft.

The features used in designing of the propeller are:

Revolve: This feature helps in creating a circular profile. Half of the sketch is drawn and revolve around an axis to get a complete profile.

Loft: This feature allows us to create complex geometry in a single feature It does this by interpolating the surfaces of different cross sections.

Extrude Cut: This Feature allows easy removal of a material from solid by extruding a profile along its normal

Linear Pattern: This Feature allows to create multiple instances of the sketch or feature along a linear edge.

Fillet: This feature creates a smooth profile along sharp edges.

RADAR:

It is a device which is used to communicate when the yacht is sailing. It is used to transmit and receive signals.

The features used in designing of the radar are:

Extrude: It is used to convert our 2D sketch into a 3D model.

Sketch Pattern: It is used to create instances of features along a defined sketch.

Split line: This feature is used to project the sketch onto the surface our model.

HULL: It is the main body of the yacht. It should be rigid to support all the other items.

The Features used in designing of the hull are:

Lofted Surface: This feature creates a surface between the edges by creating a smooth tangency between the Selected Curves.

Surface Sweep: This Feature allows to generate a surface from a section curve positioned along a path.

Surface trim: It is to consume bodies which are not need in the model .

Surface extrude: This feature converts the projected surface into a 3D surface.

Knit Surfaces: This feature is used to bind together all surfaces and combine them as a single surface. In this there is also an option of converting them into solid.

Filled Surface: This feature also creates surface between the boundaries or edges. Specify the edges and it will automatically fill surface between the edges.

Mirror: It is a feature used in creating a copy of the feature or sketch about a face or a plane.

Combine: This feature is used to convert different bodies to a single body and also it is used to subtract one body from another if they are intersecting.

Project Curve: This feature is used to create a nice 3D curve by projecting two curves drawn on different planes.

Chamfer: This feature allows us to create a sloping surface at the edge or corner of our solid body.

SUPERSTRUCTURE:

It is the structure which is fitted onto the hull. It is the main compartment for the passengers and the goods.

The features used in designing of superstructure are:

Surface knit

Project Curves

Surface Trim

Surface Sweep

Surface Loft

3D Sketch: It is a very helpful tool in creating sketches without selecting any plane.

Surface Fill

Surface Extend: It helps in extending the edge of a surface to the desired length.

RADAR MAST:

It is the framework that supports the radar.

GARAGE DOOR:

It is the door of the storage space in the yacht.

The features used in designing of the garage door are:

Split: It is used to consume the bodies from another body. The garage door body is split from the hull using split option and saved to another file.

Shell: The shell features hollows out a part, leaves open the faces selected and creates a thin walled features on the remaining faces

ASSEMBLING OF SUNSEEKER PREDATOR YACHT:

After the part designing and modelling and giving suitable appearance to the parts comes the next step of assembling all the parts to make our final product.

The assembly is done in the assembly file of solidworks. The components are inserted one by one and different mates are applied to fix them. The hull is taken as the reference.

Some of the mates used in this project are mentioned below:

Concentricity

Coincident

Parallel Mate

RENDERING OF THE ASSEMBLY:

After the assembly of the yacht it is time to render the assembly to give it a nice finished look. The rendering can be done in solid works visualise or photo view 360.

  1. First of all select a suitable scene and a suitable environment for rendering the image.
  2. Make sure that that the image is nicely illuminated and clearly visible in the rendered image. If not different types of lights can be added, for e.g. directional light, spot light, sun light.
  3. Add decal graphics to the bike to give it a nice look.
  4. The Camera can be added to obtain the desired view for the render.
  5. After adding all these check it in the preview window and if satisfied go for the final render.

The Yacht Assembly has been rendered using Photo view 360.

CONCLUSION:

  1. The parts were designed and modelled in Solid works 2015. Got a good understanding of the surface modelling and about the different tools and features used in Solid works.
  1. The parts were assembled together to get the final product. Learnt the different ways to assemble the parts by applying different mates.
  1. The assembly was rendered using photoview 360.Learnt to apply the background scene, light and set up camera. Also learnt to add the decal graphics to the product
