Analysis on a plate with a hole

FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS ON PLATE WITH WHOLE

1. AIM : To run a finite element analysis of plate with holes using SolidWorks simulation.

2. OBJECTIVE :

  • To create 3D models of Plates.
  • To perform Static analysis simulation study for first plate (with 1 hole in the center).
  • To perform Buckling analysis simulation study for second plate (with 3 holes).
  • To obtain a plot for the stress distribution.
  • To obtain a plot for the displacement.
  • To obtain a plot for the strain distribution.
  • o obtain the factor of safety.
  • To compare the results.

3. OVERVIEW AND 3D MODELS :

Plate structure with holes is widely applied in engineering practices. The reason making holes on the plate could vary, some for installing bolts and other connectors, and others for reducing weight without mainly affecting mechanical properties. Today we use finite element-based simulation software SOLIDWORKS to analyze the plate subjected to tensile loading and verify the accuracy of the numerical solutions.

First plate -

Second plate -

4. BODY OF CONTENT :

Firstly, we will create 3D models of the plates.

then we will assign material as, Alloy Steel -

now, providing the fixture geometry,

applying load as,

mesh generation,

and then, we will go for run the simulation. and we will follow the same steps for the second plate also.

and we will get results for our simulation.

5. RESULTS :

sTDY-1 (FIRST PLATE)-

stress,

displacement,

strain,

factor of safety,

Study-2 (Second plate) -

stress,

displacement,

strain,

factor of safety,

COMPARISON PLOTS :

for first plate,

for second plate,

6. CONCLUSION :

We can conclude from the above comparison plot that -

Stress in first plate is more than that of second plate.

Displacement in first plate is less than that of second plate.

Factor of safety of second plate is more than that of first plate.

So, Second plate is safer than First plate.
