Analysis on a plate with a hole

Analysis on a plate with a hole

AIM:

  • To perform a static analysis on two models of the plate with holes.
  • To create the model in Solidworks and perform the analysis.
  • Apply a fixed relation to one of the short side of the plate and apply a force of 1000N on the other such that the plate is stretched.
  • Run the analysis and compare the results for stress, strain, and displacement

INTRODUCTION:

To conduct the static analysis over the model of two different metal plates with holes was made according to the dimensions and conditions are given in the challenge to compare the results for stress, strain, and displacement using SolidWorks simulation.

3D model of two different plates:

The dimensions for the first case is as follows:

CASE 1:

  • Length=300mm
  • Height=120mm
  • Thickness=30mm
  • Circular Hole at the center: Diameter=60mm

The model of the plate with the single hole in the figure below:

The dimensions for the second case is as follows:

CASE 2:

Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the center:
Diameter=60mm

Two holes of 30 mm diameter are placed 90mm away from the central hole on both sides.

The model of the plate with the three holes in the figure below:

RESULT 2:

Name Value Units
Von mises stress 1.162 N/mm2
Displacement 5.650e-004 mm
Strain 4.280e-006 -

CONCLUSION:

After running the simulation for the first case, with a 6mm size mesh and a 1000N force. the maximum von mises stress was found to be 1.206 N/mm2. The displacement values were very low. From the results, it was observed that the maximum stress is developed near the hole as expected since holes and notches in a plate represent the most vulnerable region.

In case 2 the maximum von mises stress was found to be 1.162 N/mm2, where stress and strain developed in the plate are less compared to case 1, because of in case 2 two extra holes around the main hole acts as an auxiliary that reduces the stress concentration factor. Due to that stress developed in case 2 are less, also stress is directly proportional to strain hence strain is also less compared to case 1.
