Analysis of Buckling Phenomena of Cyclone Seperator Stand.
ANALYSIS OF BUCKLING PHENOMENA OF CYCLONE SEPERATOR STAND
AIM:
- To perform a buckling analysis on a cyclonic separator stand without stiffener
- Create a metallic stiffener on the legs of the stand and run the analysis to find out the change in the buckling factor of safety.
- The next step is to run a design study and find the optimum position for the stiffener.
- Compare the results for all the cases using tables and highlight the best one.
INTRODUCTION:
A model of cyclone separator stand has been provided by skill-lync. This study involves a buckling analysis of cyclone separator with and without stiffener by applying a constant load of 150KN will be applied at the top face of the stand and the results will be noted to find out the change in the buckling factor of safety at the different optimum position for the stiffener using design study.
CASE 1 - BUCKLING ANALYSIS OF CYCLONE SEPERATOR STAND WITHOUT STIFFENER

Run and mesh - In default mesh refinement level.
Study parameter:
Study name: Buckling 1
Analysis type: Buckling
Mesh type: Solid Mesh
Solver: FFFEPlus
Element size - 30mm
Jacobian points: 4
Mesh plot quality: High
STUDY RESULT:
Base-line simulation:

| Amplitude |
Amplitude plot for mode shape: 1. (load factor: 9.3933) |
0.0000 | 0.003416 | 9.3933 |
Discussion:
From the analysis of the above result, the maximum factor is of safety without stiffener reaches 9.3933. Even though it satisfies our requirements without using the stiffener, but by adding the stiffener we gain a higher factor of safety which leads to an increase in strength.
CASE 2 - BUCKLING ANALYSIS OF CYCLONE SEPERATOR STAND WITH STIFFENER:
Design Model:
The total height of the stand was 2m.
A stiffener is placed over the stand at an offset distance of 1m.
Buckling analysis study:
Go to Solidworks simulation -> New study -> Buckling analysis.
Then, the simulation was started by defining the conditions and applying the external loads as defined in the first case.
Study parameter:
Study name: Buckling 1
Analysis type: Buckling
Mesh type: Solid Mesh
Solver: FFFEPlus
Element size - 30mm

Fig: Buckling analysis with stiffener at 1m offset distance
Discussion:
Whereas when the stiffener is attached at an offset distance of 1m the buckling load factor increases to 27.799 as compared to case 1 without stiffener the buckling load factor of 9.399.
COMPARISON OF STIFFENER POSITION AT DIFFERENT OFFSET DISTANCE TO ANALYZE THE MAXIMUM BUCKLING LOAD FACTOR WITHIN 2m
The design study is made to make the stiffener be placed in the right position where the maximum buckling load factor takes place when the load applied.

Goals:

Study results:
Using the design study. I found that the optimal position would be to have a stiffener base at a distance of 1000mm from the top of the maximum buckling load factor of 27.799.
Conclusion:
When I added the stiffener at an offset distance of 1000mm, I found that the buckling load factor of safety increases from 9.3933 to 27.799 which is the maximum buckling load factor among all other offset distance which means the component fails only at 27 times greater than the applied force.
