ANALYSIS OF BUCKLING PHENOMENA

AIM - To Do Analysis Of Buckling Phenomena.

OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT :

Our main objective is to:

  1. Perform a buckling analysis on a cyclonic separator stand.
  2. Create a stiffener on the legs of the stand and run the analysis to find out the change in buckling factor of safety.
  3. To perform design study and find the optimum position for the stiffener.

ABOUT BUCKLING:

Buckling is the sudden change in shape of a structural component under load. If a structure is subjected to a gradually increasing load, when the load reaches a critical level, a member may suddenly change shape and the structure and component is said to have buckled. For example such as the bending of a column under compression or the wrinkling of a plate under shear.

PROCEDURE FOR THIS PROJECT:

With the given no support cyclone seperator, analysis is done for three different cases.

1. Analysis of buckling for the cyclone seperator stand.

2. Analysis of buckling for the cyclone seperator stand with the stiffener.

3. Find the optimum position for the stiffener.

Case-1 : Analysis of buckling for the cyclone seperator stand.

1. Opening the assembly part and using simulation to perform the analysis.

2. Choosing material for the cyclone seperator stand which is alloy steel and excluding all other parts from the analysis.

3. Adding fixtures to fix the geometry.

4. Adding load to the geometry.

5. Creating mesh.

6. Running the simulation.

Case-2: Analysis of buckling for the cyclone seperator stand with the stiffener.

  1. Opening the assembly part and using simulation to perform the analysis.
  2. Sketchng the stiffener and extruding it to make it in 3D.
  3. Choosing material for the cyclone seperator stand which is alloy steel and gray cast iron for the stiffener.
  4. Adding fixtures to fix the geometry.
  5. Adding load to the geometry.
  6. Creating mesh.
  7. Running the simulation.

Design Study : The optimum position for the stiffener with design study.

  1. After performing buckling test, creating new design study.
  2. Adding variables , constraints and goals to the study.
  3. Running the design study

Optimum position for the stiffener:

RESULTS:

ANALYSIS FORCE APPLIED BUCKLING FACTOR OF SAFETY AMPLITUE
CASE 1 50 KN 28.132 5.935e-03
CASE 2 50 KN 64.937 5.860e-03

Change in buckling factor of safety after inserting stiffener : 36.805

After performing design study:

FOR OPTIMUM DESIGN FORCE POSITION FROM TOP OF STAND THICKNESS BUCKLING FACTOR OF SAFETY
50 KN 1050 MM 80 MM 67.621808

CONCLUSION:

The design for the stiffener and buckling analysis has been done sucessfully.
