ADVISOR TOOL

PROJECT NAME – ADVISOR TOOL

AIM –

To use ADVISOR tool for simulation.

OBJECTIVE –

  1. Use EV_defaults_in_file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, find the vehicle can travel for 45 with FTP drive cycle? & conclude the observations.
  2. By using above case, try changing battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
  3. To perform gradeabiltity test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in_file to compare the results in the table and conclude.

INTRODUCTION –

ADVISOR tool developed in November 1994 by the national renewable energy laboratory(NREL), allows users to simulate and analyse conventional, advanced, light and heavy vehicles including hybrid electric and fuel cell vehicles. The tool allows users to access the effect of changes in vehicle components such as – motors, batteries, catalytic converters, climate control systems, and alternative fuels) and other modifications that might affect fuel economy, performance, or emissions.

It is a set of models, data, script text files for use with MATLAB & Simulink.

ADVANTAGES OF USING ADVISOR –

Estimate fuel economy of vehicles that have not been built yet.

Learn about how conventional, hybrid or electric vehicles use & lose energy throughout the drivetrains.

Compare relative tailpipe emissions produced on a number of cycles.

Valuate an energy management strategy for your hybrid vehicle fuel converter.

Optimize the gear ratios in your transmission to minimize fuel use or maximise performance, etc.

MAJOR COMPANIES WHICH USE ADVISOR TOOL ARE –

  1. Daimler Chrysler.
  2. Ford Motor Company.
  3. General Motors Corp.
  4. Delphi Automotive systems.
  5. Visteon.

HOW TO START ADVISOR TOOL?

  1. LAUNCH MATLAB and first set default location.
  2. Now in command window of MATLAB type “ADVISOR” & press enter.
  3. A new window will open and their set “matric” for unit and start “ADVISOR”.
  4. It will launch in a new window.

AVISOR tool have 3 windows-

  1. Vehicle input window.
  2. Simulation parameter window.
  3. Result window.

  1. 1) Use EV_defaults_in_file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, find the vehicle can travel for 45 with FTP drive cycle? & conclude the observations.

First we have to load EV_defualts_in file from drop down menu and change the parallel_default_in from vehicle input window.

Now changing the cargo mass to 500kg we will see change in total mass of the vehicle.

Now click on continue button after that a new window simulation parameter will pop up

In simulation parameter window change the drive cycle to CYC_FTP by selecting the drop down menu.

Below that we will see # of cycles from here we can set our drive cycle.

After pressing the RUN button, the simulation will start and it will show results in new window.

The distance travelled by vehicle in 1 drive cycle is 17.8 KM.

Increasing the no. of drive cycles to 2

Results of 2nd drive cycle-

The distance travelled by the vehicle in 2nd drive cycles is 35.5 KM. & Almost used 80% of SOC

Increasing the no. of drive cycles to 3

The distance travelled by the vehicle in 3rd drive cycle is 41.4 KM. Used completely 100% SOC.

The minimum distance travelled by the car is 17.8 KM with drive cycle CYC_FTP whereas maximum distance travelled by car is 41.4 which consumes 100% of the battery in 3 drive cycles.

Therefore, EV_default cannot travel distance of 45 KM in any drive cycle.

Q.2) In above cases try changing battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

In vehicle input window we will change the capacity of battery from energy storage which will be open in 1st “# of mod V nom” describe the battery capacity so we will change the module number of batteries from first box and we will see that changes in voltage and weight of the battery.

Now click on continue for further processing.

A new simulation parameter window will open , here we will change the drive cycles to 2 or 3 one at a time and run the simulation.

After completion of simulation we will see the result window where we observe the change in distance of vehicle travel.

We can repeat this simulation by changing the battery module the drive cycle.

  1. Energy storage system with 26 modules and 2 drive cycle.

2. Energy storage system with 27 modules and 2 drive cycles-

3. Energy storage system with 28 modules and 2 drive cycles-

4. Energy storage system with 26 modules and 3 drive cycles-

5.Energy storage system with 27 modules and 3 drive cycles-

6.Energy storage system with 28 modules and 3 drive cycles-

Therefore, for drive 2 cycle –

For drive 3 cycle –

For 28 battery modules and in 2 drive cycles distance travlelled is 46.3 KM.

  1. While changing the battery module in drive cycle 2 we get constant distance travel.
  2. Changing the battery module in drive cycle 3 we get changes in distance travel by vehicle.
  3. To cover 45 km distance a 345 volt battery with 28 modules is required.

Q.2) Perform greadeability test with PRIUS_jpn_default-in file model. Compare results in the table and conclude.

In ADVISOR tool vehicle input window select PRIUS_jpn__default_model.

Continue to the next window.

Simulation parameter window will open.

Select gradeability test and click on grade option box, a new dialogue box will open.

Window-

In grade option box we can change speed or duration with respect to our simulation.

For this simulation change speed one time or duration another time.

Also click on constant road grade.

Click OK and run the simulation and result window will open showing different results depend upon input data.

Results for duration of 10 seconds.

  1. Speed 20 miles/hr. or 32.2 kmph.

Gradeability – 19.8%

2. Speed 25 miles/hr. or 40.2 kmph.

Gradeability – 16.5%

3. Speed 30 miles/hr. or 48.3 kmph.

Gradeability – 14.7%

4. Speed 35 miles/hr. or 56.3 kmph.

Gradeability – 13%

5. Speed 40 miles/hr. or 64.4 kmph.

Gradeability – 11.7%

6. Speed 45 miles/hr. or 72.4 kmph.

Gradeability – 10.7%

For Time duration 10 seconds –

TIME DURATION (RESULTS) – 20 sec.

  1. Speed 20 miles/hr. or 32.2 kmph.

Gradeability – 22.9%

2. Speed 25 miles/hr. or 40.2 kmph.

Gradeability – 19.7%

3. Speed 30 miles/hr. or 48.3 kmph.

Gradeability – 17.7%

4. Speed 35 miles/hr. or 56.3 kmph.

Gradeability – 16%

5. Speed 40 miles/hr. or 64.4 kmph.

Gradeability – 14.6%

6.Speed 45 miles/hr. or 72.4 kmph.

Gradeability – 13.4%

Hence,

CONCLUSION –

When the vehicle speed increases there is decrease in gradeabiltiy for both 10 sec. and 20 sec duration.
