Box Assembly Using Siemens NX
Objective
To design an advanced box assembly using the sheet metal application in Siemens NX.
Introduction
Sheet metal design is a vast domain in the design industry. It is used in many sectors inlcuding the automotive sector. In this sheet box assembly design we will look at the design approach using the Siemens NX (CAD) software through various diagrams, explanations and images.
Design Approach
Figure 1 above shows the flow chart of the methods used to acheive the final design of the box assembly.
Description
Procedure for the creating the body of the box: Using the tab option, a base tab was first created. Flanges were then added by simply using the flange command on the required corners. Edges of the body were closed using Closed corners option. New flanges and hems were added to create the hemming mechanism as shown in figure 2 below. The body was mirrored to complete it and it was further merged using unite option. A dimple was added on the front of the box and it was mirrored for the back side. Another dimple was added at thw bottom of the box and a bead was created and mirrored. Hems were added on the top edges of the body.
For the Lid: A datum plane was created above the body and a base tab was sketched and formed. Flanges were then added on all four sides of the lid.
For the Hinge: A sketch was created on the side of the body and a base tab was made out of the sketch. Used break corner option on one side of the newly created tab. Added a flange and a hem. Created a sketch and a normal cutout after unbending the new tab. Rebended after creating the cutout. Mirrored the half of the side hinge to the other half of the side. Now, procceded to create the hinge on the lid with similar techniques. Created the sketch and generated tab with it. Used break corner option and added flange and hem. Created normal cutout and adjusted design with repect to the previously created design of the hinge on the side of the body to perfectly depict the hinge mechanism.

Figure 11 above shows the flat pattern for the top side hinge of the box assembly designed using NX.
Figure 12 above shows the flat pattern for the right side hinge of the box assembly designed using NX.
Conclusion
The box assembly was designed and the drawings were successfully displayed in this project report. The model was designed and the drawings were created using Siemens NX.
