Stoichiometric Coefficient- Effect of Number of Moles of Carbon C on Stoichiometric Combustion
Stoichiometric Coefficient- Effect of Number of Moles of Carbon C on Stoichiometric Combustion
Objective
To compare the effect of moles of carbon on stoichiometric coefficient (ar) using Matlab for three different fuel types: Alkanes, Alkenes and Alkynes.
Alkanes, Alkenes and Alkynes.
We will now discuss different fuel type and procedures to find the stoichiometric coefficent
1) Alkanes: Alkanes are organic compounds that consist entirely of single-bonded carbon and hydrogen atoms and lack all other functional groups. Alkanes have the general formula CnH2n+2. The equation given below will help to find out stoichiometric coefficient in terms of n.
2) Alkenes: Alkenes are a class of hydrocarbons unsaturated compounds with at least one
carbon-to-carbon double bond. The general formula for alkenes is CnH2n.
To find the stoichiometric coefficent, the equation given below will be used.
3) Alkynes: Alkynes are organic molecules made of the functional group carbon-carbon
triple bonds and are written in the empirical formula of Cnh2n-2.
The equation used to find the stoichiometric coefficent for alkynes is:
Elementwise balance
After performing elementwise balance, ar was found in terms of n, which was then equated
in matlab.
For Alkanes
For Alkenes
For Alkynes
The following codes were then computed in Matlab to find a plot of effect of number of moles of carbon on stoichiometric combustion for alkanes, alkenes and alkynes.

The image below is the result of the plot acheived after computing the codes:
From the plot, it can be inferred that the number of moles is directly and linearly propotional to the stoichiometric coefficent for all fuel types. The stoichiometric coefficent is highest for any number of moles for alkanes, whereas it is lowest for alkynes. It can be concluded that alkynes are a better fuel choice than alkanes or alkenes.
