Advanced Sheet Metal Design Using NX Cad Challenge_1_Casing Design

AIM: To create a Casing Design using NX Sheet Metal application.

OBJECTIVE:

  • To create a casing body using sheet metal features provided in NX CAD 12.
  • Make a flat pattern fro the sheet metal part and attach it in drafting sheet.

INTRODUCTION:

NX CAD:

NX, formerly known as "unigraphics", is an advanced high-end CAD/CAM/CAE, which has been owned since 2007 by Siemens PLM Software.[1][2] In 2000, Unigraphics purchased SDRC I-DEAS and began an effort to integrate aspects of both software packages into a single product which became Unigraphics NX or NX.

It is used, among other tasks, for:

NX is a direct competitor to CATIA, Creo, Autodesk Inventor, and SolidWorks.

- This software employes a technique called Parameteric Modelling, which helps the user to create the model using parametric approach. The approach in which the featuresd dimensions and other properties are governed by the other feature or model.

Sheet Metal Casing:

Casing is just an enclosure which used to hold the electronic equipments at the same time providing connections for wires and cables, connectors etc., These casings are designed in sucha  way that it should withstand all the structural loads induced during the usage, also thermal stresses induced etc.,

DESIGN METHODOLOGY:

DESCRIPTION:

Feature Manager Tree:

Features Used:

1) Sketch:

         Symbol: Options:

  • To create a sketch, you need select a plane/face on which you want to draw the sketch.
  • Then specify the direction vector which should align in the x-axis direction of global coordinate system.
  • Then specify a point where the origin should be placed on the plane/face.

2)  Tab:

        Symbol:   Options:

  • First you have to specify wether you are creating a base or secondary flange.
  • Then select a sketch or a closed curve.
  • Then enter the thickness value and also control the direction in which the tab should project.

3) Normal Cutout:

     Symbol:      Options:

  • Select a sketch which cuts the material.
  • Then specify the traget body(if you're model has multiplr bodies)
  • Enter depth of cut and type of cut needed.

4) Bend:

    Symbol:  Options:

  • Specify the curve or line which acts as the bending line.
  • Select the target face(if needed).
  • Or enter angle and choose direction.

5) Flange:

    Symbol:  Options:

  • Select the edge to create a flange
  • enter the depth and angle,
  • change the length prefernece and Inset based on the need
  • Specify the type of relief and enter the values

6) Break Corner:

   Symbol:  Options:

  •  Select a face or edges to create.
  •  Specify the method of the breaking(fillet or chamfer).
  •  Enter the radius value.

7) Unbend:

   Symbol:   Options:

  • Select a face which should reemain stationary after bending.
  • Then select all the bent faces that needs to be unbent.

8) Hole:

    Symbol:  Options:

  • Specify the type of hole needed.
  • SPecify position or select the exsisting sketch
  • shange the form and dimesions as needed.
  • change boolean to subtract

9) Dimple:

   Symbol:  Options:

  • Create a sketch that needs to be given as input for dimple
  • Select the sketch or curve
  • enter the depth, angle and specify preferences as needed

10) Bead:

   Symbol:   Options:

  • Select the curve or line which is specfied earlier.
  • specify the type of cross section.
  • Enter depth and radius.

11) Mirror:

   Symbol:  Options:

  • Select the features you want to mirror.
  • Specify the mirror plane.

12) Rebend:

   Symbol:  Options:

  • Select the bend faces which you want to make the bend again

13) Flat Pattern:

   Symbol:  Options:

  • Select the face the which acts as the base or stationary face.
  • Specify the oreintation method.

DRAFTING:(only flat pattern)

CONCLUSION:

  •  Created a casing body using NX sheet metal application.
  •  Created a drafting of the flat using Drafting tool.
