Advanced Sheet Metal Design Using NX Cad Challenge_1_Casing Design
Casing Design
Objective
To design the Sheetmetal Casing using the CAD software (Siemens NX - Sheetmetal Application)
Introduction
Sheetmetal application provides an environment for the design of sheetmetal parts used in machinery, automotive, and various industries
Design Approach
The design workflow of the Sheetmetal Casing is given below
- Sketch the shape of the base feature
- Construct the base feature using the Tab command
- Add the features like Normal cut-out, Bend, Flange, Break corner
- Unbend and add features like Hole, Dimple, Bead
- Re-bend the part and then create the flat pattern for drafting
- Create a drawing sheet
Description
The following features were used in the Sheetmetal Casing design
- Sketch
2D sketch of the part is created in the sheetmetal application
- Tab
It is the base feature created by extruding the sketch along a vector by a thickness value
- Normal cut-out
Cut-outs in sheetmetal is made with this command which cuts material by projecting a sketch onto the model and then cutting perpendicular to the faces intersected by the projection
- Bend
Bending in sheetmetal is made with this command which modifies the model by bending material on one side of a sketch line, adding a bend between two sides
- Flange
This command is used for adding a flat flange at an angle to a planar face and adding a bend between the two sides
- Break corner
The sharp corners are made round or chamfer with this command
- Unbend
This command is used for flattening a bend and the material adjacent to the bend
- Hole
This command is used for adding screw clearance type of holes in the part
- Studio spline
This command is used for creating a spline by defining poles and curvature constrains at defining poles
- Move curve
This command is used to rotate the above spline with respect to origin point
- Dimple
The spine area of the part is lifted using this command
- Bead
This command is used for lifting material along the contour of a sketch that simulates a stamping tool
- Re-bend
This command is used for restoring an unbend feature to its previous bend state, along with any features added after the unbend feature
- Flat pattern
This command is used for creating a flat pattern feature from the formed sheetmetal part
- Base view
This command is used for creating a model based view (front/top/isometric/flat pattern) on the drawing sheet which is available in the Drafting application
