Challenge

Adams Assignments – Problem 4 – Steering geometry 2

Models : Front SLA (created from Acar library)

Aim:

Perform kingpin geometry optimization to achieve the following targets

1.Caster angle : ~4.00 deg

2.Caster moment arm : ~21.00 mm

3.KPI angle : ~13.00 deg

4.Steer axis offset (resultant) : ~85.00 mm

5.Steer axis longitudinal offset : ~0.00 mm

6.Scrub radius : ~20.00 mm

Hard-point table before modification:

Hard-point table after modification:

Caster Angle:

Caster Moment Arm:

KPI Angle:

Steer axis offset (resultant):

Steer axis longitudinal offset:

Scrub radius:

Comparision Table:

Parameters Harpoint influence Default Target Achieved Units
Caster angle LCA & UCA Outer ball joints 5 4 4.06 deg
Caster moment arm LCA & UCA Outer ball joints 8.5 21 20 mm
KPI angle LCA & UCA Outer ball joints 10.13 13 13.9 deg
Steer axis offset (resultant) LCA & UCA Outer ball joints, wheel centre 85 85 85.3 mm
Steer axis longitudinal offset LCA & UCA Outer ball joints, wheel centre 18 0 -1 mm
Scrub radius LCA & UCA Outer ball joints 33 20 20.9 mm

Also, explain whether all of these parameters can be controlled independently

Nope!, it is not possible to control the suspension parameters Independently, each parameter is dependent on one another.
Eg: Change in LCA ball joints will affect the Caster as well as Scrub and KPI.
