Adams Assignments – Problem 4 – Steering geometry 2
Solution
SLA Suspension is opened and Parallel Wheel Travel Simulation is performed.

Original HP

Tuned HP
Post processor Output Plots
- Caster angle
Caster angle (Original): 5.37deg
Caster angle (Modified): 3.9965 deg
Effects:
Steering effort is lowered, steering is easy.
- Caster moment arm
Caster moment arm (Original): 9.3505 mm
Caster moment arm (Tuned): 21.7929 mm
Effects:
Self-centering torque in the steering system is increased.
- KPI angle
KPI angle (Original): 10.07 deg
KPI angle (Tuned): 12.05 deg
Effects:
Self-centering torque is increased.
- Steer axis offset (Resultant)
Steer axis offset (Original): 85.7725 mm
Steer axis offset (Tuned): 80.5925mm
Effects:
No Significant change.
- Steer axis longitudinal offset
Steer axis longitudinal offset (Original): -18.7407 mm
Steer axis longitudinal offset (Tuned): 0.8802mm
Effects:
Stability of the vehicle is increased.
- Scrub radius
Scrub radius (Original): 32.3614mm
Scrub radius (Tuned): 18.8349 mm
Effects:
Steering effort is reduced. Lower scrub radius decreases the braking disturbances of the vehicle.
CAN THE PARAMETERS BE CONTROLLED INDEPENDENTLY? :-
We cannot vary the parameters individually because they are mutually supporting and are interrelated.
If we tune any hard point to achieve the target it will disturb the other target. This is the reason why the parameters cannot be controlled individualistically.
