Wheel Arc

I have been given a challenge to find out whether the wheel arc of provided fender pass the European Regulation.

So for that i have to first determine the Wheelarch Area.

Whelarch Area:

Wheelearch area is the gap between the outer most curve of the fender and the wheel.We can see and determine this if we see the wheel from front and back side of the wheel of a car.

Importance:

When the car is running, there are some road particles like small stones and mud particles being thrown by the grip of the tyre towards back side. The force is so high that it damages the car body and pedestal if the the wheel is outside the safe area of the fender.

To avoid the problem the wheel is mainly placed inside the wheelarch area.For this there are some standards. There are different standards of different countries like Japan, Europian and United States.

So we have given the challenge to determine, whether this qualify The European Regulation.

Process:

To check the fender design according to European regulation, at first i drew a horizontal axis line as taking the wheel center as reference and the face of the tyre as my surface.

Then i drew a line in 90 degree from the axis line in the same center making sure that this line extended beyond the fender curve. This line i named as SA.After this i derw a line to the right of SA in 30 degree and named as SB.After that i drew a line to the right of the SA in 50 degree and named as SC.

After this i did a offset 150mm of the axis line to find out a point on the outer most curve and draw a line from center through that point.This line named as SE.After that i drew a final line in between SC and SE and named as SD.

After this i did measurements between these lines and the outer most curve of fender.So the results came out like this:

1. SA= 9.949mm
2. SB= 10mm
3. SC= 2.965mm
4. SD= 0.225mm
5. SE= -3.152mm

European Regulation:

According to the European standards all the values should be minimum of 10mm. For the safety of car body this regulation fixed these values.

Conclusion:

As our values is not qualifying the European regulation, this design will not pass. For passing the fender design we have to do some adjustments and change the curve a little that we can find all the values atleast minimum of 10mm. So that the fender design will satisfy the standard.
