Section Modulus Of Hood

We have been given a task to find the section modulus of our hood.

Section Modulus:

Section modulus is a geometrical property which give us idea about that how much load a perticular surface area can take and it\'s strength.

Calculation Procedure:

It\'s the ratio of total moment resisted by the section to the strenth of the extreme fiber. The formula for calculating is

S=I/y

S=Section Modulus

I=Moment Of Inertia

y=Distance between the nutral axis and the extreme end of surface

So first i took the middle section of my hood design and to find out the section for measuring the section modulus i have joined and created a surface between my outer pannel and inner panel of hood. Then i find out the inertia value I= 2.565*10 ^-6 m4. So after converting it becomes 2.565*10^6 mm4.

Then Y value has been mesured from the extreme end of the surface to nutral axis. It\'s Value is 439.971mm.

Then S=2.565*10^6 / 439.971= 5828.372 mm3.

Then i increased the sectional area by offseting the outer pannel section to 0.5mm.Then joined with existing inner pannel section to modify the section. On this section i calculated the inertia value I=2.666*10^-6 m4. So after converting it\'s 2.666*10^6 mm4.

Now the y calue has changed to 440.471mm.

Calculating Section modulus with these updated values is

S=2.666*10^6 / 440.471= 6053.353 mm3.

This value is higher than the previous section of hood.

Conclusion:

These calculation is very essential for any design to know the actual withstand capability of product. I also calculated and got to know that after doing this modification the section modulus has been increased and so does the strenght and laod capacity.
