To explore GT Suite and simulate inter-cooler using the GT-Power and calculating heat transfer and pressure drop across Charge Air Cooler

1. Objective: To explore GT Suite and simulate intercooler using the GT-Power and calculating Heat transfer and pressure drop across Charge Air Cooler

2. Description :

GT-SUITE is the industry-leading simulation tool with capabilities and libraries aimed at a wide variety of applications and industries. It offers engineers functionalities ranging from fast concept design to detailed system or sub-system/component analyses, design optimization, and root cause investigation.

It offers various modules such as :

\"\"

Engine performance and Acoustics is further characterised in various modules as follows:

\"\"

3. GUI of GT-suite :

GUI is divided in various functional regions like Tree Pane, Modelling Central Screen and various options for setting up the pre-processing of the model. Tree Pane is further classied into 5 different categories Flow, Mechanical, Thermal, References, Acoustics and General.

There are 5 different sub categories for these variables as follows :

1. Template : It is a parent of objects and parts which is used to model different components such as Engine, cranckcase, vehicle etc.

2. Objects : It is a parent of parts and can be modified to change the properties of different objects at the same time.

3. Parts : Various parts such as inlet valve, inlet port can be modelled here.

4. Connections : Connections that link various parts are modelled here and their dimensions are custumizable.

5. References : These are non-graphical objects rather data, that needs to be fed to various parts, acting as a crux information.

10. Simulating Charge Air cooler in GT-Power

1. Pre-processing

Given

  • Diameter of cooler inlet and outlet pipe= 50 mm
  • Length of the CAC= 1000 mm
  • Inlet mass flow rate = 1200 kg/ h at 100 degC
  • Outlet pressure 2 bar at 30 deg C

After loading the inter cooler model from tutorials, the inlet mass flow rate, inlet air temperature, diameter of the CAC had been set according to the given values.

\"\"

\"\"

Finally the outlet pressure and temperature have also been setup

\"\"

2. Processing :

In the time control module, the simulation has been setup to run for 30 seconds, also after reaching the steady state simulations stops the iterations for reduced processing time.

\"\"

The simulation is processed in GT-Post, where it was iterated only for 2 seconds, after which the steady state was reached.

\"\"

3. Post processing :

The Heat transfer in the output results is found to be : 3.41kJ,

\"\"

The Pressure drop across the CAC is found to be :1.19e-5 bar.

As can seen in the graphs, the steady state reaches before 2 seconds.
