Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole
Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole
Static structural analysis on a plate with a hole geometry
Design a plate with a hole model similar to what we worked in the class, but with increased thickness. Determine the maximum deformation and stress developed in the model.
Plate dimensions:
Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the center:
Diameter=60mm
smaller holes 90mm away from the center:
Diameter=30mm
Boundary Conditions:
Plate fixed at left face.
Load of 500N on the right face.
Case 1: Plate with a hole Case 2: Plate with multiple holes.
Matrials
Material used for the analysis of plate is Structural steel
Meshing
Meshing needs to be done on the plates
Single hole mesh metrics
Three-hole plate mesh metrics
Analyis settings are done by Fixing on one side and give a load of 500 N on the other side
Fixed on the one edge
Force applied on the other edge
Results
Single hole plate Deflection and Von mises stresses
Three hole Single hole plate Deflection and Von mises stresses
Consider you are a Product Engineer in an Automotive industry.You are assigned the following responsibilities:
- Compare the deformation and maximum stress developed on a structural steel model for the 2 cases (40 points)
Plate with one holes is having a deflection of 0.00027 mm deflection and stress value comes around 0.5434 Mpa and plate having three holes shows the maximum deflection of 0.00029 and stress values comes around 0.5084 Mpa
- From an analysis standpoint, which of the design will you select? Explain why? (20 points)
From the static structural analysis point, both plates shows almost same result for the von misses stress and the deflection. I will choose the plate with the one hole , because it is having less stress concentration compared to the plate with three holes.
- From a manufacturing standpoint, which of the design will you select? Explain why? (20 points)
Manufacturing point of view, if cost is the priority then I will go for the plate with one hole , because to make three holes is costly compared to the one hole.
If weight is the priority in the design , if we want to make the product with less weight and good strength , then I will opt for the plate with three holes.
