Steady state simulation of flow over a throttle body
Aim:
To simulate steady state flow over a throttle body.
Procedure:
- The geometry of the elbow in which the throttle is placed is imported into converge studio.
- Proper scaling is done and the geometry is edited in converge.
- Boundries are flagged.
- The normals are directed properly and diagnosis is done.
Case Setup:
- The simulation is done with flow of air through the elbow.
- It used pressure based steady solver.
- Cycles : 9000
- Initial Time step: 1e-9
- Maximum Time step: 1e-9
- RNG-k`epsilon` based turbulence modelling.
- Base grid : 2mm
- Fixed embedding scale: 3
- Fixed embedding layer: 2
Theory:
The throttle body is responsible controlling the amount of air that flows into an engine. A valve is mounted inside the opening of the throttle body that opens and closes depending on input from the driver applied through the gas pedal. As the gas pedal is pushed down, the valve opens, allowing air to enter the engine. As the gas pedal is released, the valve closes, reducing the amount of air entering the engine.
Geometry:
Mesh:
The meshing done by converge is cut-cell cartesian method. This a body fitted mesh. The moving geometries can be meshed properly without stretching or squeezing the cells through this method.
Embedding:
Embedding provides refinements of cells near the wall which provides more accurate results.

Pressure Contour:
Flow over Throttle:
Result:
As per the required function by throttle body the velocity increases near the throttle as per Bernoulli\'s priciple which means the preence of throttle helps in more air intake.
