Section Modulus

Section Modulus is given by the formula:-

S = I/y

where,

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

Y = distance between the nuteral axis and the extreme end of the object

Stainless steel AISI 302 is considered as material for the hood which is cold rolled with y = 520 MPa.

Original Hood Design :-

From the formula we can see that the Section modulus is directly proportional to its Moment of Inertia.

Moment of Inertia is given as the “sum of the product of mass” of each particle with the “square of its distance from the axis of the rotation”.

Thus to increase the Moment of inertia we have to increase the gap between th outer and inner panel.

For the modified hood design, the gap between the outer and inner panel is increased by 5mm. Furthermore, the embosses height have been decreased by 3 mm thus increasing the gap more.

Thus we increased the section modulus by 3% just by increasing the gap between the outer and inner panels.
