Project

STATIC STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS ON A RAIL WHEEL AND TRACK SETUP

Objectives :

  • Comparing the result values by increasing the bearing load 5 times.
  • Comparing the user defined result of total deformation with the inbuilt result by ANSYS.

Importing Geometry :

The given geometry is imported in structural anlysis.

Material :

For this simulation the default material which is structural steel used. The material properties were shown in picture,

Mesh :

Mesh size with 50mm generated for the whole componenet.face sizing with 35mm is used in wheel and rail contact faces to get the result accuratly.

Contacts :

There are two contact regions regions here.

1. The frictional contact created between wheel face and rail face which is going to have the contact while running the simulation.here the contact is wheel face and target is rail face.

2.The frictional contact created between wheel face and shaft face which is going to have the contact while running the simulation.here the contact is shaft face and target is wheel face.

Joints :

There are three joints created for this simulation.

1. Fixed joint - A joint with a mechanical connection in machines and structures, it ensures a constant relative position of parts during operation.

2. Translational joint - A translational joint allows one part to translate along a vector in respect of another part

3.Planar joint - It’s basically two flat-ish surfaces, one on top of the other. These surfaces can glide or rotate.

Analysis settings :

Number of steps is five.here initial time step for first step is 0 and remaining four step has the minimum time step of 1.e-003s and maximum time step of 0.1s.

solver type is contact -This is one of the solver types where the solver uses a Sparse solver (solver handles a system of equations where the coefficient matrix entries contain mostly zero) to solve the model.

Large deflection - This option helps the solver whether the large deflection, large stain, large rotationhappening in the simulation should be taken into account. It is available for static structural and transient structural analysis. Enabling this by ON will help the solver to consider the large strain appening, such as metal forming in a simulation and deflection.

outout controls - Output controls give the option of controlling the size of result files when a large analysis s performed. It also provides the option of what kind of quantities to be written in the result file. ll the options in the output controls are not step aware and provide the binary choices as YES or ON.

Results for Bearing load with 100000 N :

Total deformation:

Minimum total deformation : 5.6843e-14 mm

Maximum total deformation : 1000 mm

Equivalent stress :

Minimum equivalent stress : 2.207e-12 Mpa

Maximum equivalent stress :217.63 Mpa

Life :

Minimum life : 8.182e5 cycles

Maximum life : 1e6 cycles

User defined result :

Minimum user defined output : 5.6843e-13 mm
Maximum user defined output : 1000 mm

Results for Bearing load with 500000 N :

Total deformation:

Minimum total deformation : 1.4211e-13 mm

Maximum total deformation : 1000.1 mm

Equivalent stress :

Minimum equivalent stress : 1.1238e-11 Mpa

Maximum equivalent stress : 765.05 Mpa

Life :

Minimum life : 3374.1 cycles

Maximum life :1e6 cycles

User defined result :

Minimum user defined output : 1.4211e-13 mm

Maximum user defined output : 1000.1 mm
Case 1:
multiplying the bearing load by 5 times and comparing the results with load of 10000N.
Results :
  • The minimum life cycle is decreased by increasing the bearing load while maximum life cycle remained constant.
  • The minimum total deformation is increased with increasing the bearing load while the maximum deformation have no significant effect.
  • Both the minimum and maximum stress are increased with increased bearing load.
Case 2 :
comparing the user defined deformation with solver deformation.
Results :
  • The user defined total deformation and ANSYS inbuilt system total deformation are same.
