SECTION MODULUS
Section Modulus
Definition: It is a geometrical property used for cross section calculation for designing beams and other flexural members. In simple terms it is the ratio of total moment of inertia resisted by the section to the stress in the extreme fiber which is also yield stress.
SECTION MODULUS (S) = I/Y;
Where,
I = Moment of Inertia
Y = Distance of Extreme layer from moment axis
I have created the iteration for the Hood which I have designed using CATIA V5:
Considering Stainless steel AISI 302 – cold-rolled – y = 520 MPa
Below is the Hood Panel Image
Now after I have created some curves and joined them from the Hood panel as below image
The above value is I(min)= 1.865*10^6 mm^4
Below is the image of I(max) value = 3.92*10^6 mm^4
The modifcation I have done to acheive the difference is offsetting the curve of outer panel by 2mm.
Below is the image of Y value which is Y= L/2
Y= 244.39mm
The values I have acheived from doing on the calculations as per the formula S = I/Y
S1 = 7631.2 mm^3
S2 = 16039.94 mm^3
The difference in the values I have acheived is the Section Modulues (S) = 8408.74 mm^3.
Hence, by doing the above calculations I have increased the value of S by simple modification. This is how a section modulus for the member is calculated.
