Gate valve

Gate valve

Description:

Gate valve is a component which is used to transfer the flow from one place to another. Here,we are going to analyse the flow inside the gate valve and finding the mass flow rate at the outlet in two cases,

Case 1: Simulation of Gate valve.

Case 2: Parametric simulation of Gate valve.

Steps in Analysis of Gate valve:

  • Geometry
  • Meshing
  • Set up
  • Solution
  • Result

Case 1: Simulation of Gate valve (Normal Analysis)

Geometry:

  • Importing the model.
  • Lifting the Disc.
  • Fluid volume extraction.
  • Enlarging the flow area.
  • Suppress for physics.

1.Importing the model:

The first step in this process is to import the 3D model into the space claim.

File > Open > Model (Select) > Import.

2.Lifting the Disc:

The disc is to be lifted for 10mm by using the move command. The disc is lifted in order to analyse the fluid flow inside the gate valve.

3.Fluid volume extraction:

Here,we only analyse the flow so that the fluid volume is extracted. It is done by using the volume extraction command by selecting the edges at the end of the volume.

4.Enlarging the flow area:

The flow area is extended by using the pull command by selecting the faces of the inlet and outlet.

5.Suppress for physics:

In this case we only analyse the fluid region so that the solid components are deactivated.

Meshing:

In meshing, the fluid volume is discretized into a small individual elements of size 0.09m.

  • No of elements =131863.
  • No of nodes =28101.

Set up:

The set up for this case is as folows,

General :1.Pressure based solver

2.Steady state condition

3.Gravity-Z axis- -9.81

Model :1.Viscous-K epsilon

Material :1.Fluid-Water liquid

Cell zone condition :1.Fluid volume-Water liquid

Boundary condition :1.Inlet-Pressure inlet-10 pascal

2.Outlet-Pressure outlet

3.Interior-Interior

Initialization : Standard initialization-Compute from inlet.

Solution:

It is the post processing stage. The mid plane were created in this stage. The flow velocity is analysed in the plane. The mass flow rate at the outlet is calculated by running the calculation for 700 iterations and then the calculation is converged in 400 iterations.

Mass flow rate:

Result:

Velocity contour:

Case 2: Parametric simulation of Gate valve

Geometry:

  • Importing the model.
  • Parametric lift.
  • Fluid volume extraction.
  • Enlarging the flow area.
  • Suppress for physics.

Importing the model:

The first step in this process is to import the 3D model into the space claim.

File > Open > Model (Select) > Import.

Parametric lift:

The disc is to be lifted for 10mm by using the move command and then it is set to parametric. The parametric simulation means if we change the value of the disc to be lift then the solution also changes with respect to the value for that we do not need to run another simulation we can run it in the same workbench by setting the lift value to parametric.

Meshing:

In meshing, the fluid volume is discretized into a small individual elements of size 0.05m.

  • No of elements=137294.
  • No of nodes =29101.

Result:

Parameter set:

The mass flow rate for the various parameters of disc lifted were calculated.

Conclusion:

In case 1,we can one analyse the mass flow rate for the single value.Whereas,in case 2 we have already set the value for the lift as parametric in the space claim itself so that we don't want to calculate the mass flow rate for the another value in a seperate workbench. The mass flow rate is calculated in the same workbench by providing the lift value of the disc in the parameter set. While comparing case 1 and 2,case 2 is more efficient than case 1.
