Mesh the BMW M6 Model

BMW M6:

The BMW M6 is a high-performance version of the 6 series coupé/convertible, designed and developed by the motorsport division of BMW. The BMW M6 was based on the subsequent generations of the 6 series. The BMW M6 concept made its debut at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show. The M6 shared the same uneven firing 5.0 L V10 S85 engine and SMG III gear box with the E60 M5 that produces 373 kW (507 PS; 500 bhp) at 7,750 rpm and 520 N⋅m (384 lb⋅ft) of torque at 6,100 rpm.

Objective:

Mesh the BMW M6 Model after geometry cleanup.

Procedure:

* Import the BMW M6 model into ansa. Turnon the shadow mode and convert into PID mode. Open quality citeria and got to presentation parameters tab then click on the check box Draw cons in PID, MID .... mode like in ENT mode in Visualization mode.

Steps to follow:

1. Clearing Topological errors.

2. Assiging PID's to all models in model browser.

3. Surface meshing half portion.

4. Clear all mesh errors.

5. Symmetry the other half geometry.

6. Create a wind tunnel for CFD analysis.

1. Clearing Topological errors:

* To get a detailed view of the model decrease the mesh length in the mesh mode.

to

* Check for topological errors for the given model through geometry checkup in the utility window or turn off the shadow mode(use ctrl+shift to turnoff shadow mode temporarly) to see single cons and triple cons(which tends to errors).

* Press F1 to view the front view of the car to easily cut right half portion of the car without the symbol at the front and the wheels.

* Use Universal delete, coons, fitted, TOPO, HOT POINTS (by spilting the surfaces),

INTERSECT,CUT,PASTE,RELEASE commands to clear all the topological errors.

to

to

to

* At the grill delete the back surface and fill the surface to make entire car a single volume. similarly perform at all remaining parts to make single volume.

2. Assiging PID's to all models in model browser:

* Based on the component of the car PID folders are created in the model browser and all PID's are assigned.

* Now we can easily switch on to the indiviual parts by using model browser.

* Compress the unwanted PIDs using Compress command. (By doing so undelete option no longer useful)

* Corrrect the wheels by isolating only wheels.

to

3. Surface meshing half portion:

* Check the gemotric errors before going to mesh mode. If no errors found goto mesh mode.

* Mesh the half portion of the model with the element size as follows:

Body & Exhaust-3mm, Lights- 4mm, Tires,rims, windows and mirror-2mm, Grill-mm

distortion-15% and distortion angle-0 using FREE mesh option.

4. Clear all mesh errors:

* Do a surface mesh check and if errors found correct them.

* Go to the mesh parameters and in basic tab give target length as perimeter, min target as 0.9 and max length as 5mm .

*Under quality parameters enable only skewness, min length and max length diable other options.

* Go to hidden mode and you can find the errors count on your left screen. Right click on the errors count and press show only.

* Correct the errors using MV SURF, PASTE, CUT RECONSTRUCT.. functions as per error.

5. Symmetry the other half geometry:

* Copy the half portion using TRANSFORM option by selecting symmerty option.

* Similarly copy the tyres and rims using TRANSFORM.

6. Create a wind tunnel for CFD analysis:

* Using POINTS and CURVE functions create the four planes on all sides of the model as distance mentioned below.

INLET - 4 times length of car

OUTLET - 6 times length of car

TOP - 3 times length of car.

BOTTOM - Close to the tires.

* Change the element size of the bottom 20mm, pillars 50mm, top 100mm.

* Use SPACING option to eleminate gradual changes in the mesh for the walls.

Result:

BMW model is meshed without any geometric and mesh errors.

LEARNINGS:

* F1 to F8 to view different views of the model.

* REGENRATE, MV SURF, PASTE, CUT, SPLIT functions in mesh mode to correct the errors.

* TRANSFORM function - how to copy or move the model.

* MESH quality checks and parameters.
