Hood - Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section Modulus of Hood :

This is a report is on finding the section modulus for the hood designed earlier and improving it based on the inputs and thereby increasing the strength of the hood.

Definition of Section Modulus:

Section Modulus is a geometric property used in the design of beams and structural members. It also depends upon the shape of the geometry. It is defined ratio as a moment of inertia of a section about its centroidal axis and to the distance of extreme layer from the neutral axis.

It can be calculated using the formula S = I/y

S = Section Modulus

I= Moment of Inertia

y = distance between the neutral axis and to the end of the object.

Higher section modulus value leads to higher strength.

Calculation of section Modulus and Modification of Hood:

Case 1:

The Maximum and minimum moment of inertia is shown below.

So, section modulus of Y distance of the below profile

using the formula will be = 7.47e+008mm^3

\"\"

Case 2:

The Distance between outer and inner panels is increased to have a high moment of inertia values.

This is done as section modulus is directly proportional to the moment of inertia.

So it will result in higher section moduli values.

The distance between the outer and inner panel is increased by 1 mm.

As a result, the section modulus of modified Hood will be 8.04e+0.008mm^3

\"\"

Observation:

The section modulus of modified Hood is now more than improved than the first case.

The distance increased was only 1mm so the resulting increase in section modulus value is only little, as the distance is further increased it still might increase.

Also, Modifying the embosses in Hood inner panel will also lead to increased section moduli value and thereby increasing the strength of the hood.
