Project

Hood Meshing

Objective: To clean up and mesh the Hood Geometry for structural analysis.

Procedure: This procedure consists of mid surface extracting the inner nad outer hood panel. The process is divided into number of steps as followed below:

Step 1: Cleaning up the inner hood geometry.

Check for the errors in inner hood geometry and fix the errors to clean up the inner hood panel.See figure 1& 2.

Figure 1 Figure 2

Step 2: Extracting the mid surface.

Now using the Offset command we are going the extract the mid surface.

Select the offset command from thr faces toolbar and then select the offset surface as shown in figure 3.Now enter the value the distance which is half the thickness of the sheet.Click Ok to produce the surface but do not delete the parent surface.See figure 4.

Figure 3 Figure 4

Step 3: Isolate the mid surface and fix the errors in the geometry.

See figure 5 & 6.

Figure 5 Figure 6

Step 4: Mesh the extracted surface of element size 5mm.

Now we are going to mesh the surface as per the quality criteria asked in the question.

See figure 7 .

Figure 7

Now try to remove the mesh errors as much as possible to improve the mesh quality.See figure 8.

Figure 8

Now we are going to deal with the front hood panel.

Step 5: Isolate the front hood panel and extract the mid surface.

Using the mid surface command we are the going to extract the mid surface.

See figure 9.

Figure 9

Figure 10 will show the mid surface of the front hood panel.

Step 6: Isolating the mid surface of the inner and the front hood panel to perform the hemming process.

Figure 11

Figure 11 will show the mid surfaces of the font and inner hood panel.

Step 7: Projecting the outer edges of the front panel to the inner panel.

Figure 12 shows the projection of the outer edges of the front panel to the inner panel.

Figure 12

Now delete the highlighted part as shown in figure 12.

Step 8: Follow the hemming process.

Now we are going to perform the hemming operation .To do this we have to paste the edges of the inner pannel to the edges of the outer panel.

See figure 13.

Figure 13

Step 9: Mesh the geometry.

Now mesh the geometry as per quality criteria as asked in the question.

See figure 14.
