Gate Valve Simulation

Gate Valve Simulation

A gate valve, also known as a sluice valve, is a valve that opens by lifting a barrier (gate) out of the path of the fluid. Gate valves require very little space along the pipe axis and hardly restrict the flow of fluid when the gate is fully opened. The gate faces can be parallel but are most commonly wedge-shaped.

Gate valves are widely used for all types of applications and are suitable for both above-ground and underground installation. Not least for underground installations it is paramount to choose the right type of valve to avoid high replacement costs.

Setup-

Fluid volume is extracted from both ends by 800mm as shown –

Meshing

Element size-5.45 mm

One inlet and other one is outlet is define for fluid as water

CFD TOOL POST-

  • Z-direction =-9.81 m/s
  • Realizable k-epsilon turbulences model with scalable wall function and
  • Inlet condition-pressure inlet with 10 pa (gauge pressure)
  • Mass flow rate at outlet for different values of lift is simulated and calculated below-

Conclusion -

From above design point table, we observe that with increase in lift height, increases mass flow rate and even number of element also increase with each design point increase.Further observation of value lift height and obtain mass flow rate are linear to each increase design point (difference of 0.04 appox. in value) and negitive indicate flow taking place towards outer direction (outwards).
