Front fender design

Design of front FENDER

What is FENDER? and its purpose

Fender is the part of a vehicle that cover the wheel and its well (space where the wheel is housed). Its primary purpose is to stop the dirt, water or sludge from being thrown around by the wheel. It is often also called mudguard given its purpose.

There are two fender types, one is fender skirts and another one is stylished pontoon fender.

Types of BUMPER

Bumper is a part which absorbs impact due to collision.

There are two types of Bumpers used to make fender.

  • Full bumper type
  • Half bumper type (mostly preferred)

from single blank of metal only one full bumper can be manufactured, at a same time we can produce two half type bumper can be made using single blank.

weight also drastically reduced and performance will be increased.

Mounting regions in front fender

  1. Drip area:

  • It is the area through which fender is attached to engine housing through fasteners.
  • There should be some consideration followed to design the drip area of fender.
  • From back side of front fender, there will be 200mm clearance for cowl(wiper motor) mounting area.
  • From front side of front fender, there will be 150mm clearance for head lamp housing unit.
  • Remaining area we can use to design a drip area.
  • Height of fender can be minimum 80mm for child and adult (94mm,WAD 1700MAX, this +14 for increase in inertial force due to accident) impact.
  • Parting will minimum 5 not more than 50mm from SRL ( a reference line on HOOD side, a point on fender makes from a line of 45 degree from ground level ).
  • Drip area will not reach the engine assembly due to restriction of 40mm length, so there will some L-Shaped Bracket to connect with it.

2.Wheel arc area:

The Wheel arch is the semi-circular part positioned above the wheel of a vechicle.

JAPAN REGULATION STANDARD

The value will be more than 5mm at 30 degree at forward and 50 degree at backward from central vertical line.

EUROPEAN REGULATION STANDARD

The value will be more than 10mm at 30 degree at forward and 50 degree at backward and line 150mm above x-axis and mid-point between 50 degree and line above 150mm.

US REGULATION STANDARD:

The value will be more than 5mm at line 30 degree forward and 50 degree backward from central vertical axis.

  1. Sill mounting area:

The mounting area at the panel(metal plate) directly below the bottom of the door supporting the floor and may be used to combine floor and body.

  1. Bumper mounting area:

A mounting area of fender to bumper (horizontal bar fixed across the front or back of a motor vehicle to reduce damage in a collision).

  1. A-Pillar mounting area:

There are three main types of pillar when referring to the design of a car - A, B, C.

  • The A pillars on your car hold either side of the front windscreen in place. They are the ones you see as you look straight at the car from the front.
  • B pillars start where the driver and passenger-side windows end as you look backward along the length of the car.
  • C pillars hold the sides of your car\'s rear window in place.
  • Some cars also have a D pillar, such as estate cars for example. D pillars hold the sides of the rear window of the car in place and can also sometimes serve as a housing for the rear lights like indicators, brakes and alike.

Here there is a mounting area in fender with the A-Pillar of the body of car as follows
