Frequency Analysis of a rotating shaft using SolidWorks
Objective:-
To find out 5 different frequency mode shapes of the given rotational shaft and list the resonant frequencies as well.
Theory:-
Every structure has a certain frequency at which it has a tendency to vibrate, this is called its natural or resonant frequency. This resonant frequency is associated with a particular shape that the structure tends to assume when vibrating, this is called mode shape. In practical, we should create the structure in such a way that it doesn\'t vibrate at its resonant frequency. Hence, Frequency analysis becomes vital for the design of any structure.
Procedure:-
First, the model was created with random dimensions, the model is given below:-
After the design is complete, frequency study was conducted on this model. For the frequency following parameters were fixed:-
Material = Alloy Steel,
Fixture = Bearing fixture on both the stepped faces.
mesh = very fine mesh
mode shapes = 5
The meshed structure is given below:-
After this, the simulation was run and the 5 mode shapes were as follows:-
Mode 1:-
Mode 2:-
Mode 3:-
Mode 4:-
Mode 5:-
Result:-
Resonant Frequencies:-
Frequency vs Mode Graph:-
Now, that we know the particular resonant frequency for each mode shape, we should provide a damper with a particular frequency so that this shaft is nowhere close to its resonant frequency.
