Project

Flow over bicycle

Objective:

Studying the effect of drag force on a bike

Introduction:

Drag force is critical limiting factors that affects the performance of racing bike as it is propotional with the square of the speed according to the following equation:

`fd=0.5*rho*(v^2)*cd*Area`

A survey was done for the drag coefficienrts ,and from it the drag coefficient range was varied from 0.3 to 0.8 as the bike frame tubes are mainly spheres and human body is spheres and cylinder.

Input:

Cd=0.8

rho=1.2 kg/m^3

area=0.3 m^2

Code

clear all
close all
clc
%input
c_d=0.8;
rho=1.2;
area=0.3
v=[1:1:30]
%modeling equations
fd=0.5.*rho.*area.*c_d.*(v).^2
%plotting
plot(v,fd)
xlabel('velocity (m/s)')
ylabel('Drag force(N.)')

Program explanation

  • First input is declared
  • Then an array is construted for the velocity which is fom 1 to 30 m/s with a step is one
  • Then the equated is writted and dot is used to repeat the multiplication for every element in the array
