Project

Fender design

Objective

To create a Fender in NX Cad with the requirred interfaces and dimensions.

Fender

Fender is part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well. Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.

Sticky materials, such as mud, may adhere to the smooth outer tire surface, while smooth loose objects, such as stones, can become temporarily embedded in the tread grooves as the tire rolls over the ground. These materials can be ejected from the surface of the tire at high velocity as the tire imparts kinetic energy to the attached objects. For a vehicle moving forward, the top of the tire is rotating upward and forward, and can throw objects into the air at other vehicles or pedestrians in front of the vehicle.

Zones of the Fender

Different parts of the Fender include

  • Fender drip zone
  • Fender wing
  • A pillar zone
  • Bumper zone
  • Fender drip

Fender drip zone is where the fender will fix to the platform of the vehicle with a support. The fender must ensure a minimum of 10mm clearance with engine bay parts in this zone. The fender drip area have provision two different draft angle to ensure that technical parts are not visible from outside to improve the perceived quality.

There are two requirement of fender fixation position. The front fixation must be maximum 150mm distance from front most point of fender and the rear fixation must be max 200mm from rear most point of the fender. This zone must also have ribs to ensure stifness of the drip.

  • Fender wing

Fender wing zone have provision for fixation of Wheel cover. Wheel cover is a plastic part which ensures the projectile from the wheel do not damage the engine compartments. The fender wing must respect the regulation requirement of different countries.

  • A pillar

This is where the Fender is fixed to the A pillar of the vehicle. This fixation is covered by a Triangular plastic part for perceived quality.

The styling cutline of the fender near A pillar is also important to ensure the Front door dont interfer with the fender during door opening and closing.

  • Bumper

This zone have fixation holes for the Bumper bracket to be fixed. There are two types of styling intention in this zone.

a. Full Bumper type

b. Half Bumper type

Half Bumper type is widely used because of less scrap metal content.

Conclusion

Thus Fender is designed for the requirements.
