FENDER DESIGN
FENDER DESIGN
FENDER:
Fender is the American English term for the part of an automobile. Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road wastes from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.
TYPES OF FENDERS:
There are 2 types of fenders depends up on its production approach.
- Full Bumper Type.
- Half Bumper Type.
DESIGN CRITRIA OF FENDER:
FIG-1
Here we have considered the Design approach for Half Bumper Type to achieve some criteria’s like weight reduction and maximum raw material consumption.
By considering the given design data we have to develop mounting regions in 5 different areas. They are as follows.
- Drip
- A Pillar
- Body or Door Mount
- Sil
- Bumper
DRIP AREA:
FIG-2 FIG-3
The above fig-2 shows the drip area for our design. We consider 150mm from the rear side and 180 mm from the front side which is one of the standard considerations and designed the inner structure according to the master section. We have given a additional gusset on one side of drip area for strength and additional structure on other side to reduce the tendency of vibration for sheet to achieve less NVH levels. The above fig-3 shows the master section of Drip Area. We have provided 2 holes to accommodate M10 bolts for fastening the fender to the frame.
A PILLAR AREA:
FIG-4 FIG-5
This is one of the joint areas where we have to ensure that the hole provided for mounting the fender should not affect the clearance at the joints and the aesthetics of the vehicle. Fig-4 above shows us one of the clearance issues between fender and a pillar mounting area which will affect the look if the vehicle. By considering all the above points we have provided a single mounting hole of M6 to reduce the complexity at the time of removal.
FIG-6
BODY MOUNT AREA:
FIG-7 FIG-8
This is the area where the fender will be accommodated along with the door hinge area. Hence we have to consider the collision points and clearance points with the door and design the mounting area for fender and Fig-7 shows us the example for miss alignment between door and fender. The above Fig-8 shows the 2 M6 mounting holes which were provided for the mounting of fender to the Door mount or Body mount area.
SIL MOUNT AREA:
FIG-9
This is the bottom most mounting point of the fender to mount fender rigidly. The above Fig-9 shows us the arrangement for the sil mount area with a single M8 hole.
BAFFLE AREA (FENDER LINING):
FIG-10
FIG-11 FIG-12 FIG-13
Those are the additional hole provided as shown in Fig-10&11 (M8 holes) to support the accommodation of fender lining in our design. It is a plastic sheet used to cover the metallic part of the fender which acts as a barrier between metal fender and foreign bodies to reduce corrosion by sticking foreign bodies on metal fender. Hence every vehicle is accommodated with fender ling shown in Fig-12&13 and mud flaps shown in fig-14 to reduce the expose of fender to foreign bodies.
FIG-14
BUMPER MOUNTING AREA:
FIG-15
The above Fig-15 shows the accommodation of holes (M10) for the mounting of bumper. For this we have to consider the clearance between the bumper and the fender.
