Project

Application of Batch Meshing using Hypermesh

Objective:

Perform Batch-meshing on the following components with the given criteria and assign the non-linear material property Steel to them.

Quality Criteria:-

S.N Quality Criteria Value
1 Aspect Ratio 5
2 Skewness 45
3 Warping 15
4 Taper 0.5
5 Min. Length 2mm
6 Max. Length 8mm
7 Min angle Quad 45
8 Max angle Quad 135
9 Min angle Tria 20
10 Max angle Tria 120
10 Tria % 10

Target Element Length = 5mm

Procedure & Results:

Before working on the model first create a new parameter and criteria files with target element size of 5 mm and quality criteria as discussed in objective section. Enable mid surface extraction to auto extract the midsurface of the components.

The paramters and criteria file can be created using Preferences -> Parameters/ Criteria -> make changes -> save as. It is shown in below figure\"\"

  • Now create a material -> steel -> edit properties as shown in below figure
  • \"\"
  • Also to assign non linear properties and thickness, create property and edit the panel as per below figure
  • \"\"

Part -1 Hood

  • Select Radios profile while opening the hyperworks
  • Import the file into hypermesh. There are 4 components. Inner, outer, latch and hinge reinforcements.
  • Create duplicates of each one of them.
  • Now hide all the surfaces expect inner duplicate. Go to 2D -> batch meshing / QI optmize -> select surface (displayed) -> select the previousy created parameters and criteria file -> mesh
  • This will create an auto midsurface based on paramter files and perform automesh as per the constraints mentioned in criteria file.
  • \"\"
  • Repeat the process for all remaining 3 components

  • Check for mesh quality to see if any element is failing. If failing then optimize it using element optimmizing techniques
  • Now assign the material and property created as per figure shown above to each individual mesh
  • Edit the thickness in property to 1.2 for hinge and latch reinforcement and 0.75 for inner and outer reinforcements.

Part 2 - Fender

  • Select Radios profile while opening the hyperworks
  • Import the file into hypermesh.
  • Create duplicates of the component present.

  • Check for mesh quality to see if any element is failing. If failing then optimize it using element optimmizing techniques

CONCLUSION:

The study help us understand a faster technique for meshing surfaces. Based on the method, following observation can be made:

  • The techniques creates meshing in few minutes in contrast to hours in manual meshing
  • It also upholds the quality criteria and provide and good quality mesh based on the criteria mentioned.
  • But the main drawback is it is mainly suitable for simple geometry. For complex geometry, this technique may create unstructured mesh to satisfy quality criteria which is a bad practice and it doesn\'t follow a uniform mesh flow. So this requires extensive element optimization to improve mesh quality but selecting bad mesh and improving them, which creates a our task complicated.
  • Thus although fast and simple, this method should be used conservatively for complex models.
