Analysis of mixing efficiency in Mixing Tee

  • Mixing Tee is used for mixing two streams of fluids with different flow parameters and properties.
  • The mixing efficiency of a Tee section was tested in different cases by varying the inlet velocities for hot and cold air inlet streams. The simulations were done in Ansys Fluent and Details are as follows:
  • Case 1:
  • Case2:
  • Case3:

Results and Discussion:

  • Plots for results:

Case3:

  • Conclusion:
  • Better mixing was achieved in the Short tee with inlet velocities 3m/s and 12m/s for hot and cold air respectively (Case 3). The average temperature at the outlet was 15.996 deg C in comparison to 18.412 deg C and a19.086 deg C achieved in cases 1 and 2 respectively.
  • Increasing the inlet velocity for the cold air has a positive effect on mixing efficiency in case 3. It produced an outlet temperature which was lower than that achieved in case 1.
  • Increasing the size of mixing Tee as done in the case 2 without changing the flow parameters has an adverse effect on mixing. This is evident from the results of outlet temperatures 18.412 deg C and a19.086 deg C achieved in cases 1 and 2 respectively.
