VEHICLE MODELLING USING ADVISOR
ASSIGNMENT 1:
Use ADVISOR tool to simulate the following
1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
Solution:
ADVISOR:
ADvanced VehIcle SimulatOR was created by the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) Center for Transportation Technologies and Systems. It's a flexible modeling tool that assesses the performance and fuel economy of conventional, electric, hybrid, and fuel cell vehicles. It allows the user to change components and vehicle specifications-such as electric motors, batteries, engines, and fuel cells upon which ADVISOR helps to simulate the vehicle's response under different driving conditions.
This cutting-edge tool runs in the MATLAB/Simulink software environment.
Before we start the tool make sure that the current folder has all the requires advisor folders.
This tool is initiated by typing advisor in the command window.
Make sure that the metric system is turned on.
Leave all the systems untouched except the load file and Cargo mass rows. The load file loads in different cars, which can be chosen based on the requirement.
Continuing to the next box we get, change the drive cycle to the required CYC_FTP
Now when we run,
we get the results page
It shows the distance covered by the vehicle is 17.8 km.
Now since our objective is to make the vehicle move to 45 km, we go back and run the model for 4 drive cycles.
When we run,
We note that the vehicle stops at 41.4 km, as the battery is drained which is indicated by
1. STATE OF CHARGE GRAPH INDICATES 0 CHARGE
2.THERE IS A WARNING SHOWED IN THE RIGHT END WHICH SHOWS 'Required distance exceeded EV range'
HENCE we go back to change the battery capacity and then run the simulation.
result:
HERE WE NOTE THAT THE VEHICLE HAS RUN FULL DISTANCE AS PER OUR REQUIREMENT AND ALSO NOTE THAT THE BATTERY'S SOC HAS NOT REACHED 0.
ASSIGNMENT 2:
Perform gradability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file
Compare your results in a table and conclude.
SOLUTION:
LOAD THE DATA OF PRIUS_JPN, AS SHOWN AND CONTINUE
NOW WHEN WE SELECT THE GRADABILITY TEST, ENABLE ALL SYSTEMS SO THAT BOTH THE BATTERY AND ENGINE IS FUNCTIONING.
when we run the chart, we get the results page which shows the maximum possible gradability of the vehicle at the specified speed.
TEST 1:
Now when we increase the speed for the same inputs we can be sure the vehicle's gradability will decrease. This is demonstrated below:
THE SPEED HAS BEEN INCREASED FROM 55mph to 60 mph i.e 88.5kmph to 96.6kmph
THE RESULTS FOR WHICH IS:
TEST 2:
For the same speed of 55 mph when we initialize the vehicle to run at a gradability higher than 8.9% we note that the vehicle struggles to run. This is demonstrated below:
The result is demonstrated below:
THE BLANK SPACE CORRESPONDS TO THE INABILITY OF THE VEHICLE TO CLIMB A GRADABILITY OF 10% AT A CONSTANT SPEED OF 88.5 kmph.
OUR CONCLUSION CAN BE VERIFIED BY THE DOCUMENTATION OF THE GRADABILITY TEST SECTION
