Application of IoT and Embedded Systems

There are multiple applications of IoT in embedded systems. A user can’t undermine the significance of embedded systems in IoT. For example, it finds use in monitoring and control, asset tracking, and predictive maintenance.

  • Monitoring and control are one of the most common applications for IoT in embedded systems. Connecting sensors and actuators to the internet make monitoring and controlling a system remotely possible. This is used for monitoring everything from the room's temperature to controlling a conveyor belt's speed.
  • Asset tracking is another common application for IoT in embedded systems. By attaching tracking devices to assets, it’s possible to track their location in real-time. For example, monitoring the location of a fleet of vehicles or keeping track of high-value inventory.
  • Predictive maintenance is a relatively new application for IoT in embedded systems. By connecting sensors to the internet, it’s possible to collect data about the condition of a system. Engineers can analyse this data to predict and schedule maintenance. Reducing the downtime and lowering the overall cost of ownership.

There are multiple embedded IoT platform design methodologies. The most important part of the process is ensuring that the platform can support the specific requirements of the application or applications. First, it is necessary to understand the application's requirements and select the appropriate hardware and software components to support them.

One common embedded IoT platform design is the modular approach. The platform and a set of modular components can be easily swapped out or upgraded as needed. This approach has the advantage of making it easier to add or remove features from the platform as required.

Another common approach is to use a more unified approach to platform design. This means designing the platform as a single unit with all the necessary hardware and software components. This approach can make the platform more compact and easier to deploy.
