The most important tasks are analysing various biological samples to cure or identify various diseases, preparing biological samples for testing, performing blood tests, and documenting their results in reports.

  • What types of medical equipment and tools do you know how to use and maintain?

As a medical technologist, I have knowledge and training in the use and maintenance of a wide range of medical equipment and tools, including

  • Laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, microscopes, and automated analysers for performing tests on blood and other bodily fluids
  • Imaging equipment such as X-ray machines, MRI and CT scanners, and ultrasound devices

Additionally, I can use technology such as microscopes, centrifuges, and automated analysers to perform and document laboratory tests.

Interview Questions for Medical Technologists

  • What types of patient care procedures or tests you can perform?

As a medical technologist, I can perform a wide range of laboratory tests and procedures to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. This can include analysing blood and other bodily fluids for various chemical and cellular markers, such as glucose levels, haemoglobin, and white blood cell counts. I can also perform microbiological cultures to detect and identify bacteria or other microorganisms. Additionally, I can operate and maintain laboratory equipment and take responsibility for quality control and ensuring that test results are accurate and reliable.

  • Which field of medical technology is your favourite?

Since we can utilise machines to screen for so many different things, blood testing is my favourite area of medical technology.

For instance, I had the chance to deal with a patient at my prior employment who required a blood test to identify whether or not they were pregnant. We performed a pregnancy test using a machine, which assisted us in determining the patient's status.

  • How well can you deal with pressure and stress at work?

I am excellent at handling work-related stress. I've discovered that handling pressure with composure helps me get through difficult situations.

For instance, I once collaborated with a brand-new team member who had never completed their assignment. We were running low on supplies, so I led them through it until we were back on schedule by explaining what they needed to do and assisting them.

If you are a fresher with no prior experience, you share some instances when you got a chance to lead a group of people.

  •  How do you ensure the laboratory and equipment are properly cleaned, stocked and maintained?

To ensure the laboratory and its equipment are properly cleaned, stocked, and maintained, I, as a medical technologist, usually follow these steps:

  • Regularly clean and disinfect all equipment and surfaces, following the manufacturer's instructions and relevant guidelines.
  • Perform routine maintenance and calibration checks on equipment to ensure it functions properly.
  • Keep accurate records of cleaning, maintenance, and calibration for reference and to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Stock and reorder all necessary supplies to keep the laboratory running efficiently.
  • Ensure that the laboratory environment is safe, clean, and well-organized.
  • Describe the way you handle and keep specimens.

I make it a point to put on gloves whenever I handle specimens. Additionally, I use tweezers or tongs to transfer samples from one container to another.

Before labelling the specimen containers, I write my initials and the date the sample was obtained on each sample bag. After labelling each sample, I store them all in a safe location until the time comes for testing.

  • How frequently do you renew your training as a medical technician?

I frequently attend conferences and webinars about cutting-edge technologies and scientific research since I'm constantly trying to find methods to become a better medical technologist.

I've also completed several online courses that have expanded my knowledge of particular processes and methods. I also subscribe to periodicals and journals that offer insightful information on the most recent advancements in healthcare.

  • Give an example of a moment when you had to inform a patient's family of the results.

In my prior position, I was responsible for informing a patient's family. The patient was elderly and had several health problems. The information I had to impart caused much alarm among their family members.

I answered all of their inquiries and thoroughly explained the situation. They acknowledged the value of our treatment strategy and expressed appreciation for my full explanation.

While answering such questions during an interview, be genuine and explain only if you had a similar experience. If you are not sure about the answer, it is better to skip such questions.
