What is A Resume?

A resume is a document that outlines your qualifications for a job.               

It includes

  • Educational qualification
  • Work experience
  • Skill set 
  • Other relevant information

The purpose of a resume is to show employers that you are qualified for the job and to get an interview. There are 2 main kinds of resumes

  1. The Chronological Resume
  2. The Functional Resume 

The Chronological Resume

This is the most common type of resume This type of resume lists your work experience in reverse chronological order, starting with your most recent job. Your education and skills are listed after your work experience.

The Functional Resume 

The “functional” resume is another type of resume. This type of resume does not list your work experience in chronological order. Instead, it groups your skills and experiences together. The functional resume is best for people with gaps in their work history or who are changing careers

The DOs and DON'Ts

DOs:

  • General rules to follow
    • Use simple words and language that can be understood by everyone
    • Focus on your strengths and achievements
    • Highlight what you have accomplished in each job
    • Use numbers to quantify your accomplishments
    • Make sure your contact information is up to date
  • Crafting a Winning Resume
    • It should be clear and concise.
    • It should be free of any typos or grammatical errors
    • Tailor your resume specifically for the job you are applying for.
    • Highlighting the skills and experience that are most relevant to the position. 
    • Use strong action verbs to describe your professional accomplishments.
    • Proofread your resume multiple times before hitting send
  • Formatting the Resume
    • Use simple, clean fonts and layouts
    • Stick to a professional or neutral tone
    • Use bullet points to make your information easy to scan

DON'Ts:

  • General rules to follow
    • Use of pronouns such as “I” or “me”
    • Including irrelevant information
    • Lie or exaggerate about your qualifications or experience
    • Using unprofessional terms
  • Crafting a Winning Resume
    • Don't use a generic resume template. Your resume should be unique and stand out from the rest.
    • Don't use a lot of graphics or fancy fonts. Keep it simple and professional.
    • Don't make your resume too long. Keep it to one or two pages at most.
