weld verification
geometry used for analysis
A frictional contact is established between the perpendicular plates, bonded contact is given for weldments
A mesh of size 7mm is used on all the simulations where different materials were analyzed.
The model is fixed at corner points and circle in the center
A load of 15000N is applied on the center of the bottom plate
A Max stress of 340 Mpa is observed in the case of stainless steel.
A small deformation of .3575mm is observed in case of stainless steel
Factor of safety is observed to be less than 1 in major areas indicating failure
stress on weldments in case of stainless steel
contact pressure on ribs
ALUMINUM ALLOY:
Stresses reported in this case are looking considerable to previous analysis
Deformations in case of aluminum
factor of safety in this case is above 1
Bronze: The weldments are now made of bronze, plates of stainless steel and ribs with copper.
stresses in bronze
Deformations incase of bronze
factor of safety is too low incase of bronze
Conclusion:
As we can see, stress reported through simulation is lesser than yield stress and ultimate stress in case of aluminum whereas it is higher than yield stress in other materials indicating that the material reaches plastic region.
Also looking at the factor of safety,as rule thumb it should be greater than 1 for safe operation without failure, under this criteria aluminum is just above 1 and is good for the applied load compared to other materials.
Based on the above observations,it is better to go with aluminum in this load scenario.
