Week 9 Tension and Torsion test challenge

OBJECTIVE :-

  • To perform the tension and torsion test on the specimen provided

PROCEDURES:-

  • Open ansys workbench R2
  • select explicit dynamic analysis
  • select steel 1006 from explicit material listed in engineering data section
  • import the geometry
  • open ansys mechanical
  • rename parts if required
  • select steel 1006 as material for given specimen
  • create new coordinate system on both end portion
  • for torsion test insert new cylindrical coordinate system on middle part od specimen ,arrange its orientaion according to rotation
  • insert methode in mesh section , select whole part as its scope and select tetrahedrone as type
  • insert sizing in mesh section on one end ,select type as sphere of influence ,input its radius as 22 mm ,element size as 3 mm ,select its coordinate one which newly created on same part ,do this for other end too
  • for torsional test select middle part ,insert sizing, select type as spherer of influence ,input radius as 8 mm,input element size of 1 mm,and select two tapered part in middle section ,insert sizing ,input element size as 1.5mm
  • in analysis settings input end time as 1e-3 s
  • in analysis settings insert fixed support ,select one end of specimen as its scope
  • insert displacement ,select other end as its scope
  • input for y and z as zero . for x axis input 16 through tabular data
  • for torsional test change coordinate of displacement from global to newly created cylindrical coordinates ,input for non rotational axis value as zero for rotaional axis input 1080 through tabular data
  • insert total deformation equivalent stress ,equivalent strain and user defined temperature
  • run solve

TABULATION :-

TYPE TOTOAL DEFORMATION (mm) EQUIVALENT STRESS(MPa) EQUIVALENT STRAIN (mm/mm) TEMPERATURE °C
TENSION 18.002 627.36 0.0030636 273.53
TORSION 12.169 628.27 0.0031879 382.59

CONCLUSION:-

  • Total deformation obtained in tension test is 18.002 mm
  • temperature raise in tesion test is 273.53°C and it is lessthan that of torsion test which is 382.59°C
  • equivalent stresss in both tension and torsion tests are almost same and it is 627.36 and 628.27 MPa respectively
  • equivalent strain in tesion test is equal to 0.0030636 mm/mm
  • equivalent strain in torsion test is equal to 0.0031879 mm/mm
  • total deforamtion in torsion test is equal to 12.169 mm
